Re: Cornell Class of 2016
I pay 760/month and my utilities are included. From friends I know, I'm on the better side of the spectrum in terms of what I'm paying. I also signed my lease in April last year. My friends that got screwed waited until August.
I like living in collegtown. I paid a premium to live alone this year (next year saving a bunch by living with people) and it was a great decision. I'm not home too much, but it's nice to have a place to escape. It's not too loud at night but I live in "upper collegtown" which is not really close to any popular bars.
Fair warning: if you live in lower collegtown, prepare to walk up hill.

I live downtown. I share a 3BR and pay a little over $500 for what is probably the nicest bedroom and apartment any of my friends have. I buy a bus pass for $200/year (it's free the first year you're a Cornell student) which saves me morning walks.

Re: Cornell Class of 2016
Err, I was kind of planning on living in Hughes for various reasons. And yes, one of the reasons is because I am still holding out for Harvard and don't want to have to break a lease / leave roommates hanging. If I really wanted an apartment though, yeah, I'd be worried about waiting until June. I was actually planning on visiting in early May to look at apartments but if I get my Hughes assignment, I may not bother.toothbrush wrote:On a side note.. I feel like I may end up at Cornell for sure but I'm too scared to go apartment hunting yet. Lavitz, since I know you have HLS pending and such.. are you worried about getting a place already or you feel it's okay to wait til June ?

Yes. The hill is about as steep as it possibly can be. It makes the walking distance seem 2-3x as long from the commons to collegetown. When driving up the hill I have to shift into 2nd or 3rd gear.toothbrush wrote:... are you serious ?kapital98 wrote:Gnarly doesn't begin to describe it. If you plan on commuting, live in the part of Collegetown closest to campus (ex: above Starbucks). The hill is an absolute killer and will add an extra 10-15 minutes to your morning commute.

If you're commuting up Buffalo, you're not really living in Collegetown though. That hill is gnarly. I live in lower collegetown (near state street) and have about a 15 minute walk to class. It's slightly uphill, but it's not nearly as bad as it would be if I lived west of Stewart (where THE hill begins).kapital98 wrote:Yes. The hill is about as steep as it possibly can be. I agree with this. It's a little hard to define where collegetown ends and the commons begins. At least no one has explained it to me. IMO, where you live is about the absolute maximum distance for walking.HBBJohnStamos wrote:

Yes. If you live downtown or in Fall Creek the 10 (the campus loop) runs every five minutes in the morning on weekdays. The 30 (and a bunch of other buses) run up State Street and College Ave almost as often. They both stop about 200 feet from the law school and take about 10-15 minutes each. You have a free bus pass your first year at Cornell. It's about $200/year after that.CR2012 wrote:Is taking a bus a viable option?

Is there a dress code for ASW? ...I might be slightly more concerned about my outfit choices than about the actual ASW experience.
