...was I the only TLSer there?? It was amazing, Ricky (Dean Revesz) is awesome --he had some great answers to the increasing questions of law school affordability (more info on LRAP if anyone's interested) and gave more info on the new curriculum and abroad programs. The alumni were really helpful/excited to speak with admitted students as well.

Ah, I'm sad I missed it! Thanks for reporting back. Any good info on the LRAP that you got?

edit - Re: LRAP, I thought NYU's was one of the best in the T14 but after looking it up a few days ago it seemed extremely strict and not very generous (wouldn't include undergrad loans, for example).

Interesting --I'm not sure about the undergrad loans issue, but what was notable was that they recently re-structured it so that between NYU's repayment assistance and the federal loan forgiveness program, you can make up to $80,000 and have your loans either forgiven or repaid --before it was $55,000 I think. So to me, that sounds much more manageable because honestly, making $50,000 is practically nothing in DC or NYC even if your law school loans are being paid off. I think it's also important to note that I'm assuming if they're relying on the federal loan forgiveness program to augment their LRAP, then it's important that you take out as much as you can in federal loans rather than private loans.

He also mentioned that there's a whole information session on it during the ASW that will have much more detail.

Awesome, thanks so much for summarizing that for me! I look forward to hearing more at ASW.

I assume that this will come up at the ASW meetings, as well, but what did they say about the study abroad program? There was some talk on TLS a while back about emphasizing summer internships abroad and making it easier to study languages--did Dean Revesz say anything abou that?

Yeah, he talked a lot about the new study abroad programs. In terms of languages, none of the new programs (Paris, Buenos Aires, Shanghai) require language skills, but he said they would provide opportunities to study the language before the program starts if you so choose. He didn't go into much detail about that, but I'm assuming that would involve auditing a course on campus (not for credit) or something similar. The Paris program has two tracks: International Arbitration and EU Regulation. The Buenos Aires program is somewhat focused on transitional/social justice, but also more broadly about doing business/legal work in Latin America. He didn't talk too much about Shanghai. He said for now, the programs aren't too selective (i.e. as long as you show some level of interest, you won't be turned away) but that could change. The DC semester also seems awesome. It's headed by someone that came from the WH General Counsel's office (didn't write down names but I'm sure it's online somewhere), and they're working really hard to place students in great internships that will also complement the academic component of the program, so they're not just doing administrative nonsense. As someone who's fallen prey to the DC internship scheme before, I can really appreciate that effort on their part.

Not sure about internships abroad, but he did talk about the $4,500 PI stipend for summer internships and they have a new partnership with the Ford Foundation that provides $15,000 (  ) to up to 25 NYU students to intern at partner organizations, some of which are abroad. That seems like an amazing opportunity since you earn a pretty penny (or at least cover all expenses for the summer) but could still be eligible for your full 3L scholarship.

ETA: regarding language skills, he emphasized that the new programs will all be taught in English, but if you do have reading/writing fluency in that language, they would make sure you would get opportunities to use those skills and write papers in Spanish/French etc. so you can develop those skills further.

Sweet, thanks! That's a lot of money the Ford Foundation is throwing around--and it probably doesn't look bad on your resume, either.

Thanks for all of this info. I hope that these international programs actually do translate into jobs for NYU students.

In the same boat but am assuming/hoping that the invites don't all come out at the same time!

+1 for IILJ. I'm assuming there's some system of first choice/ alternate candidates or something. I'm hoping to hear some time next week since today was the informal interview for the first round of finalists.

Me too! I never post but I'm pretty excited about NYU's ASW and I wish there was more action in this thread. Anybody going to go to one of the Thursday morning classes?

I'm planning to do one of the afternoon classes (didn't know there were morning classes).

FYI, for anyone who cares, they'll have a bag-check area for anyone who is getting in before they can check in to where they're staying. I'm getting in at 10AM and it doesn't look like anything starts at NYU until noon so I'm hoping I can use that time as a chance to explore the area :) Then again, knowing me I'll get lost and it will take me a full two hours to get to the campus from the airport.

Lol I guess I should have read the whole email instead of just skipping to the schedule. Unfortunately I think those are going to be too early for me unless my flight gets in early :(

My flight to NYC got cancelled so I'm stranded in Detroit tonight. They booked me on another flight tomorrow morning- hopefully that one won't have weather troubles so that I don't miss too much of the ASW.

JFK. The flights to Newark were actually not cancelled, but they couldn't get me on one, so I'll be trying JFK again tomorrow
