That is super close, wow. I went a little farther south than I'd planned but the location is great and there's no highway between me and the school.

Reading about the prices of NYU and Columbia law housing make me feel better about paying a little more than I wanted to be within walking distance.

I'll be up in the Northwest at a place called Midtown Commons.

I googled and I am jealous because of the resident herb and vegetable garden and "Prominent Art Sculpture by local artist extraordinaire, Evan Voyles"BigZuck wrote:Was thinking the same thing while reading through that thread.shifty_eyed wrote:Reading about the prices of NYU and Columbia law housing make me feel better about paying a little more than I wanted to be within walking distance.

If that's what made you the most jealous then you must have missed the part about Yappy Hour at the Bark Park.shifty_eyed wrote:I googled and I am jealous because of the resident herb and vegetable garden and "Prominent Art Sculpture by local artist extraordinaire, Evan Voyles"BigZuck wrote:Was thinking the same thing while reading through that thread.shifty_eyed wrote:Reading about the prices of NYU and Columbia law housing make me feel better about paying a little more than I wanted to be within walking distance.

Still qualifies as north (but not nearly as much as it did in the old days), but definitely not west. It will be an easy commute.BigZuck wrote:Was thinking the same thing while reading through that thread.shifty_eyed wrote:Reading about the prices of NYU and Columbia law housing make me feel better about paying a little more than I wanted to be within walking distance.

But what everyone should be jealous of is your proximity to Black Star Co-op (LinkRemoved). (BTW, the fact that they pay livable wages means no tipping. As in it's not allowed.)

I'm not super familiar with Austin yet but looking at a map you're right, that's just straight up north, not northwest. My bad.BVest wrote:Still qualifies as north (but not nearly as much as it did in the old days), but definitely not west. And Black Star Co-Op is amazing! We actually decided we would move to that apartment complex while eating there.

I mean if we're bragging about location it's going to be hard to beat my walking distance to Barton Springs.

Re: Texas Class of 2016
I applied for about 5 to 6 firms (including where my SA is for the 2nd half of summer) directly on December 1. Then I sent a transcript to all of them as soon as I got my grades in mid-January. Panicked because I only applied to 5 or 6, so the next day I applied to a judge. Got a call to interview immediately and got the job during the interview. Sucks because I then got interviews with 4 of the 6 firms I submitted to, offers from 3, could only say yes to one. (General rule - you may not turn down an offer from a judge).shifty_eyed wrote:Thanks for posting, emkay! I remember PMing with you about UT last year, and you are even more helpful now
When did you apply for and get your summer jobs? I thought people generally targeted judicial internships OR 1L SAs. How hard was it to apply and interview for both?
Targeting both was not that hard, but only because I screwed it up. : )

Re: Texas Class of 2016
I worked on-campus coaching a team housed in a different department (a nonathletic team). It was actually way more than 20 hours a week because I traveled every weekend.dkb17xzx wrote:emkay, thanks for doing this.
Did you work on-campus or off-campus?
How'd you manage to kill 1L (assuming this since you got a 1L SA)?
Any other academic / job-related tips or suggestions...
thanks again
No idea. I did not follow my study plan at all. But if you want my advice for what I planned to do, I think it's on page 13 of this thread. Do that plan PLUS be smart and you'll be fine.

Seems like the key is 1) not being a moron and 2) actually having the resolve to get everything done throughout the whole semester. Soooo we're worried haha.emkay625 wrote:I worked on-campus coaching a team housed in a different department (a nonathletic team). Re: Texas Class of 2016
Did you have trouble scheduling the two, or is the traditional scheduling set up so you can do both? I know splitting summers with firms is common in TX, but I didn't realize it was with judicial internships too. Do you regret not doing two firm SAs? If so, is it for any reason besides the money?emkay625 wrote:I applied for about 5 to 6 firms (including where my SA is for the 2nd half of summer) directly on December 1. I got a studio on 40th st close to I 35. It is a little over a mile and a half from campus. There are quite a few bus routes that run through my street so I am definitely happy about that. It will be pretty easy to get to school and to some bars. It isnt anything special in the looks department, but I dont ask for much.
