That said, I've heard from a few housing sources that getting a studio or 1-bedroom as a single (not couple or family) 1L is unlikely, so if that's the only way you would be willing to do campus housing, then you may want to consider doing off-campus. I believe you can still apply, and once you get your housing offer, if it's not a studio, you can just decline it and do an apartment search on your own.

This is how I'm doing it - I'm in a similar situation of just not really wanting roommates at this point in my life. I talked to someone who had a studio in Lenfest, though, and they said that a number of solo 1Ls had studios there last year. I'd imagine they have a set number reserved for law students and it just depends on how many apply for couple/family housing every year.

That's encouraging! I'm hoping for one of the cheaper ones on 420 116th. It looks like last year housing assignments came out on May 29, so there's still plenty of time to do a regular apartment search if necessary.

Thanks guys! This is all very good to know. I guess my fear is not only landing the studio/efficiency in the housing lottery (I wouldn't mind finding something on my own if I don't get that) but more signing a lease for more than 1300/month to then run out of money halfway through the semester. What happens then? Do we hit the streets? I thought I had put those days behind me...

Here's another strange question. Are Columbia's grants guaranteed to us for all 3 years or can they be changed due to receiving another award? The reason I'm asking is because I'd like to apply for some scholarships, but if Columbia will just subtract any scholarship money I receive from my law school grant it seems kind of pointless.

I have an Australian Shepherd/Rottweiler mix. He has the build and size of a shepherd (about 45 pounds) but with Rottweiler coloring. In short, he's magnificent. He's really sweet and playful, but has those classic shelter-dog insecurity issues. It sounds like your dog would be a perfect buddy for him.

Yes! Mine is a Rottweiler/Hound mix. 50 pounds with Rottweiler coloring! It's a match made in canine heaven! I'm so happy Duke will have friends Is yours people shy? Duke is still pretty afraid of people, though he's getting better. We're constantly working on socialization.

Yay!! Rondo can be super friendly with people, but he's a little more skeptical of men (who isn't?), and can seemingly sense "dog people" and tends to be more skeptical of people who aren't as confident around dogs. He sees right through that. Hopefully Rondo can teach Duke how to hang out with people and Duke can teach Rondo how to hang out with other dogs!

I would talk to the fin aid office about this. I would guess it would depend on what size of scholarships you're talking about.

ETA: Also, theoretically, CLS doesn't really have an incentive to decrease your grant unless your outside scholarships were really significant. If their students get outside funding, then they graduate with less debt, which makes CLS look better without costing them anything.

Someone asked about this sort of situation at the first ASW - I don't remember exactly what they said, so you should still call, but I got the sense that grants are pretty locked-in once you accept the award. They certainly aren't going to increase your award if one of your parents loses their job, so while they ask you to report any major changes in your family's financial situation, I doubt they would just subtract the scholly.

Why won't Columbia give me my financial aid package?? Accepted in February and submitted all my finaid materials before the the March 1 deadline. NYU deposit deadline is in 2.5 hours and I am just officially freaking the fuck out.

Next, you'll get a small packet of the administrative stuff (a copy of the fin aid questionnaire, etc.) and after that you'll get gigantic blue box of brochures on essentially every aspect of CLS. At some point you'll also get a small NYC guidebook, which is the most useful aspect of all of this tree-killing. All of that started about 3-5 days after my NCE, so you should expect it soon!
