Got the fin aid offer: 60k

I'm totally stoked to be receiving anything but have a hard decision. USC offered me 120k.

Does cornell negotiate? How do you approach this subject with the financial aid office? Any insight would be awesome. Thanks!!

Yay! Are you considering negotiating with Cornell at all? There are a few people on lsn with similar numbers that got the $120k offer, but I'm not sure how to approach it. Maybe something like, "I'm seriously considering Cornell, but $40k would make my decision easier"? Not sure if I have the energy to write more appeal letters though.
Yeah, I'm certainly not afraid to negotiate, but I have no idea how to approach this. So far, I've mainly been negotiating higher ranked schools by saying "I'd love to go to your school, it's my top choice, but I can't pass up all this money from X school." How do I tell Cornell "Think you could give me more money, since Duke only gave me $30K less than you?"

Any suggestions? Thanks, guys!

You don't have to mention other offers at all. Maybe something like, kindly reiterate your interest in Cornell and state your gratitude for the initial offer, but express some concern regarding the job market and cost of attendance and ask if they can reconsider your award.

Sorry, Misto! What other offers do you have? Not that they have to be from peer schools or anything, but you can say something vague along the lines of "Cornell is my first choice, but due to other offers of merit aid it would be difficult for me to attend without a small scholarship."

Yup, I'll probably try this today. Will let you know how it goes, moonman.

This. Don't you have something from BU?

Also, in the event you do get into Berkeley off the WL, let them know about that and I'm sure they'll throw you something.

BU updated their offer to me: 22K a year.

I am on Berkeley's WL/1rst quartile.

edit: I see. Mention BU?

Yeah, mention BU.

Don't think you should mention Berkeley unless it happens later on.

Why are we operating on the assumption that Cornell has stopped giving out scholarship offers?

"Are you on our Facebook page? You must ask to join with the name you applied to Cornell with to be accepted into the group."

So I was accepted around two weeks ago and sent all my financial information in within the post-acceptance 2 week buffer (I was accepted after the March 15 deadline).

Does anyone else have experience with this?

Does anyone know when I should expect to hear about a potential scholarship?

If they choose not to give you any, will they explicitly inform you of that, or do they only let you know if you solicit a scholarship offer?

Thanks in advance.

Lol, may I ask why this is a problem?

Anyway, change your Facebook name, get into the group, change it back?

They will tell you if they're not giving you anything. The real question is when they're going to e-mail you. I have no idea how long it will take them this year, but it wouldn't be unprecedented for them to take until mid-April.

Wait they already told you that? They didn't even mention the possibility of redistribution after seat deposits? That is kind of brutal. I would not expect too much even if you mentioned BU due to the difference in rankings between the schools. Would you mind sharing your numbers (LSAT, GPA)? I'm just trying to see where I might fall given the offers already received by others and their statistics.

Also I am confused iMisto, your profile says you are a dude .... haha

IMisto is a dude with numbers basically at both medians.

Looking at the scholarships and numbers Cornell was all over the map like Northwestern. I'm not sure how you can predict what they will offer.

Haha that's my plan --just annoying because my facebook name is a common nickname for a not-common name which I never go by. I guess you have to make sacrifices for the people (law schools) that you love.

You could message them with your real name perhaps?
