Completely unfamiliar with NY rental costs and locations here. My girlfriend and I would move over together and we can each afford about $1000/month-1200/month. Is a bachelor/1bdrm large enough for two people feasible in Manhattan at around 2k-2.4k (would -really- prefer 2k though), or am I looking across the river with this?

You could find a studio/1 bedroom in Manhattan for $2,000 but it is likely to be pretty tiny and/or not in the most desirable location. Then again, I do know people who have found some total steals by pounding the pavement for a couple of weeks, and viewing tons and tons of apartments. Hopefully you'll be able to spend some time apartment hunting/exploring different neighborhoods in NYC before you sign a lease.

I haven't lived in Harlem but I've pretty decent things about it. Some people say they wouldn't choose to live above 120th Street for safety reasons but I think there's a Whole Foods on 125th Street now and if that's not a sign of gentrification I don't know what is. I also know a guy who lives in the 140s and he's really happy with his location.

The Upper West and Upper East Sides are generally pretty cheap as well (at least compared to lower Manhattan).

A moderately sized 1 bedroom in the Village/desirable parts of Lower Manhattan will run you at least 3,000/month (someone correct me if I'm wrong). If you end up at NYU and you want more space for your $ I would definitely consider Brooklyn - there are some awesome neighborhoods just 15-20 minutes from NYU by subway.

I think the proximity of the dorms to the law buildings is great but I'm not a huge fan of dorm style living. I love cooking, having people over for dinner parties, creating a space that is really mine aesthetically, etc. It's just a personal preference/priority thing.

UES/UWS further from the trains is really affordable. You could get 7-800 sq feet around that price.

check the distance from the trains and get as close as you can, but these are really the best places for you to be looking. Also, UWS >> UES

I live in the dorms and I really like it. Being a few minutes walk away from campus (or right across the street if you're in D'ag) is basically the best thing for me, particularly around finals time. Plus it makes it way easier to go to parties and lectures during the semester. But yeah, a lot of people don't like it because of the dorm aesthetic. I came straight from college so having dorm furniture and whatever was no big deal to me, but a lot of people aren't into it. Really just comes down to personal preference.

I think people are a lot more concerned about budgeting in NYC than they need to be. NYC is not outlandishly expensive unless you're trying to raise a family in Manhattan or something (the exception to this is rent, but that's not going to take you by surprise). You're not going to have to skip meals or anything. You don't need a NYC-tailored budget. Just be generally frugal.

That's good to know, thanks. I'm in a city now so I'm pretty accustomed to living on a budget. you just hear things, scary things, about stuff being expensive in New York. As long as it doesn't cut into my drinking money, I'll be okay.

I think most people find that food prices require the biggest mental adjustment because buying groceries can be just as costly (if not more!) than getting a crappy meal out. So having a budget for food and sticking to it will probably be the most helpful thing you can do. Remember that meals out are taxed in NY state.

And obviously just be smart. Don't take cabs unless it becomes a matter of safety, and pregame EVERYTHING because no one wants to get drunk off of $8 beers. So much of the perceived expense of living in New York is just the temptation of all that the city has to offer. You can actually live on a student budget fine enough, and you'll find that your definition of "expensive" starts to change.

Worth noting- the grocery store on the corner near Mercer is pretty crappy, but offers a student discount on Thursdays (something I *wish* I'd known when I moved to Mercer).

I think that looks accurate - I've seen a list of all 3Ls who summered at big firms, and the list seems a bit longer than what Campos has the number at. His stuff is generally good, but I think that he brings a little too much of his vigor to schools that aren't the proper subjects of his rage.

I also think that means that H, C, P, and C are all likely a bit higher - so don't assume that this number should be taken against whatever NLJ numbers exist for the other schools because it won't be an apples to apples comparison. However, it certainly looks good for at least us, if not also those (and other schools in a similar situation).

When we were registering for the public interest fair they told us like 10 times "New York UNIVERSITY School of Law, NOT!!!!!!!! New York Law School." Apparently cause we would get disqualified or something

If I find the article, I'll link it here, but a blogger took the article regarding the NYLS lawsuit and wrote a pretty long and substantial post about how it went to show that NYU was a fraud and a terrible school. Wasn't sure whether to face-palm, laugh or cringe.
