Re: Chicago Law Class of 2016
Okay guys, housing question: http://rs.uchicago.edu/graduate_housing ... ster.shtml. When they say a 2-bedroom unfurnished is $929, do they really mean that the entire 2-bedroom is only $929, or is that what each occupant pays? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm used to NYC rents...
Also New Grad Residence looks interesting. Are they listing rent for 12 months or 9 months here? http://rs.uchicago.edu/graduate_housing ... hall.shtml

Almost definitely for the apartment (ie, not for each person, assuming you want to share). A lot of graduate students here have families, so 2bdrms are often used by one family. Graduate housing does vary significantly according to size and utilities included, though, so you should check that. Also it's worth checking whether the night shuttles (North/South/East/West) run near 53rd and Dorchester... if the 171 and 172 are going to be cancelled in August, as it would seem, these will be the only way to cut short your walk home. FWIW as of right now they only operate starting at 6pm and leave from the Reg.

Thanks for the info. That will probably be the lowest I've ever paid for a shared apartment...wow. I think I'm just starting to appreciate the COL differences. Assuming no night shuttle, do you think it would be safe to walk back to 53rd from the law school after 10 pm? I would basically be walking through campus, right?Snuffles1 wrote:Almost definitely for the apartment (ie, not for each person, assuming you want to share). There will be a shuttle, and you shouldn't walk home at night to 53rd.banjo wrote:Thanks for the info. That will probably be the lowest I've ever paid for a shared apartment...wow. Also the university is going to come up with something to replace the CTA buses. I wouldn't worry about that.

Went to visit the school on Friday and sat in on one class.
Wanted to check out apartment buildings but it was freaking cold!! (fwiw, I am from Wisconsin, but still, it was freaking cold--I think having a car and/or knowing the bus schedule will really make life easier)

Did you end up sitting in on Ben-Shahar? How'd you enjoy it?reallysearch wrote:Went to visit the school on Friday and sat in on one class.

I like the class material and how it was presented, and it's not as intimidating as I expected2014 wrote:Did you end up sitting in on Ben-Shahar? How'd you enjoy it?reallysearch wrote:Went to visit the school on Friday and sat in on one class.

A lot of people volunteer to answer questions before he called on someone (at the end of the class Ben-Shahar did mentioned quite subtly that he was disappointed by the lack of participation)
I talked to some current 1Ls too and got quite a lot of useful info.

Ahhh finally found some time to flip through the admitted students handbook. Why ruin a good hot dog with all those veggies? Disgusting
I can also see we have a very attractive student body

Good to hear that it was somewhat enjoyable. The lack of intimidation is pretty indicative of the faculty as a whole too (minus a couple). I heard about Ben Shahar calling out the class from some friends too. What is ironic is that the other section (i.e. the one in property at that time) is full of people who speak consistently and often and a lot of people would rather they pipe down haha.reallysearch wrote:I like the class material and how it was presented, and it's not as intimidating as I expected2014 wrote:Did you end up sitting in on Ben-Shahar? I walk home to 52nd (and pretty far west) late at night plenty, but I'm always scared I'll get mugged. Never have been, but I'm a big dude so that might be part of it. 53rd is off-campus; it's pretty bust itself until about woodlawn and further west, but walking to it from the law school will take you through some dark neighborhood streets.banjo wrote:Thanks for the info. And Omri is great. I liked his class a lot. At the end of the year he had his 1L students over for beer and hot dogs at his house; super chill.

I just registered for ASW. I hope I get to stay w/ 2014... I imagine us watching NBA on TNT and making fun of the Knicks for being old and Shaq's analysis for being bad. It's gonna be great. Unless you have a cat or something.
