Re: Penn Class of 2016
So apparently ASW starts tomorrow (apparently to the law schools twitter account haha)? To everyone visiting, just wanted to say, I hope you all have a great time, and don't hesitate to ask any current students anything!

Re: Penn Class of 2016
Well, I have a student host for Friday night, but looking for a place to stay Thursday/Saturday nights. If any generous person in the area has a couch to crash on, or 0L who is also going to ASW and wants to split a hotel room, let me know! Just message with contact info and I'll get in touch asap
Thanks!

Any recommendations for decent and affordable hotels near the school or easily accessible by public transport (preferably the former)?
Thanks!

Re: Penn Class of 2016
If it makes you feel any better, almost every 2L/3L I'll ever talked to has told me not to worry about grades and that they don't matter.JamesDean1955 wrote:The ASW was really good, not the best I've been to, but I really think that they had the whole "Penn Law sells itself, so we're not going to try and oversell it to you" vibe. Also, the word collegial was mentioned A LOT lol. All in all everyone was very friendly and supportive. The facilities are very nice (but certainly not awe inspiring like Michigan or Yale, etc.).
All in all it swayed me slightly more in the direction of Penn. But I was already like 90% sure on Penn before attending ASW, so I didn't need much convincing.
The one qualm I had was when one of the school reps at one of the panels said "you shouldn't worry too much about grades, because even those at the bottom of the class here at Penn get good jobs." For that, I just LOL'd...that was the only oversell I noticed![]()
Also, it's clear from a comment of one of the school reps that they do indeed monitor TLS
Edit: just to clarify, not that I agree with them, but its not like it was just the one person you talked to who thinks that.

Note to penn for next years asw, wtf am i supposed to do with a this plastic bag of shit when i'm running around town. give it out at the end of the asw. never will know what that t-shirt said
the one thing that surprised me was how SO MANY people could say they do/will live in 2k/month apartments with a straight face
73% at firms, of which 60%ish or maybe more are NLJ250 firms
15% last year clerked
6% PI
4% "business"
Thats pretty much the entire class. Sure there's gonna be some poor jobs in there, but i'd bet that those striking out are those with bad grades, bad personalities, AND no good WE

Eh, fair enough, I definitely think it is up for debate (re bottom of the class), but certainly a great majority will not have a problem in the employment arena.SaintsTheMetal wrote:Note to penn for next years asw, wtf am i supposed to do with a this plastic bag of shit when i'm running around town. give it out at the end of the asw. never will know what that t-shirt said![]()

But yes, I am glad I'm not the only one who noticed the abundance of Penn students living in $1400+/month apartments (some of them over $2k)!! Where do they get the money for this?? I'm thinking either they had some awesome work experience and tons of savings, or rich parents. In any case, that won't be me unfortunately!

How was ASW, bros? I was down at UVA, but I think I'm pretty close to leaning Penn.

Re: Penn Class of 2016
I just did some math because I'm bored, to guesstimate the percentage of each 1/3 of the class get biglaw/A3 clerkships (based off the c/o 2012 data that says 77.1% of the class are in those jobs). For those that don't know, top 1/3 is ~3.5, and I've seen bottom 1/3 as ~3.15. So roughly, the first group is GPA's >3.5, the second are GPA's between 3.5 and 3.15, and the third is GPA's below 3.15.JamesDean1955 wrote:Eh, fair enough, I definitely think it is up for debate (re bottom of the class), but certainly a great majority will not have a problem in the employment arena.SaintsTheMetal wrote:Note to penn for next years asw, wtf am i supposed to do with a this plastic bag of shit when i'm running around town. give it out at the end of the asw. never will know what that t-shirt said![]()

0.94*.3333+0.78*.3333+0.6*.3333 = 0.773 (or 77.3%, close enough to the 77.1% from the class of 2012 employment #'s)
So if my complete guesses are anywhere near reality, you've got roughly a ~78% chance from "median" (middle 3rd of the class, really) or ~60% from the bottom 3rd of the class (I just used 94% for the top 3rd since I assumed at least a few people will want to do other things, or would strike out).
Of course, these guesstimates could be way off, and it could be 94/85/53, or 94/70/68, or... anything, really. Hell, you could assume 100% of the top 3rd are doing biglaw or A3 clerkships, and it could still be 100/72/60 (or however you want to break it up). My point is that no matter how you do the math, statistically you'll likely have a >50% chance at biglaw even if you're in the bottom 1/3 of the class.
Can you tell I'm bored and don't wanna be outlining?

any other wilson recipients in here who are still very clear on where they are going to attend? we have a deadline fast approaching (April 12th) and since the agreement does not say anything about withdrawing other applications the way Wilson, Toll etc. all day, I am wondering if we can just accept to keep options open until May 1st

They're definitely the minority. Most people pay between 900-1400.SaintsTheMetal wrote: the one thing that surprised me was how SO MANY people could say they do/will live in 2k/month apartments with a straight face

Haha, at UVA's ASW the most expensive apartments in the area went for 900 a room, with utilities, gym access, and fully furnished. They don't know how good they have it.PennBull wrote:They're definitely the minority. I just try to remember the car payment, insurance, gas, and maintenance that I'll be saving. Also, I live in Philly now, with no roommates, for $700/mo in Center City. That includes everything except Comcast. It's possible to live cheaply here.

Yeah I don't pay much at all, although I'm in University City.shntn wrote: Also, I live in Philly now, with no roommates, for $700/mo in Center City. That includes everything except Comcast. It's possible to live cheaply here.

+1 to this. I remember during ASW and even orientation it seemed like everyone was living in ridiculously expensive apartments, but after a while I've realized most people pay less than that, so don't feel "left out" or anything.PennBull wrote:They're definitely the minority. Re: Penn Class of 2016
I've started looking for housing on Craigslist, and have so far been able to find some really cheap options in University City/ West Philly, which is awesome, but I won't be able to go check places out until after graduation in mid-May. Do you guys think late May would be too late to find cheap housing? Also, how did you find your 1L roommates? Did you use the Facebook group?

Re: Penn Class of 2016
Were these numbers just randomly chosen or is there some basis to the 60% of bottom third getting big law? And to be clear that 77% is the expected likely-hood of landing biglaw/A3 as a 0L coming to Penn correct? If there is any legitimacy to those numbers, then Penn looks good! Too bad schools don't dissagregate their employment stats by class rank. It would be really cool to see an expected likely hood for each school.SportsFan wrote: 0.94*.3333+0.78*.3333+0.6*.3333 = 0.773....
My point is that no matter how you do the math, statistically you'll likely have a >50% chance at biglaw even if you're in the bottom 1/3 of the class.

Re: Penn Class of 2016
I literally just made them up (besides the 77.1% we know is the A3/biglaw number), sorry if I'm giving you false hope. It was an attempt by me, out of curiosity mostly, to figure out what percentage of each third of the class (by grades) is likely getting these favorable outcomes. Its not the "chance" you have of getting biglaw/A3 if your GPA is in the certain range, either.Nickg415 wrote:Were these numbers just randomly chosen or is there some basis to the 60% of bottom third getting big law? I might be interested in splitting a hotel room on Monday 4/8 (and possibly Sunday 4/7) if any ladies are interested... PM me. I can't find anything even close to my price range without going far and/or scummy
After my hotel experience while visiting UCLA (gross) I am not feeling adventurous!

I'm pretty sure Penn has a slot of rooms available at the Sheraton across the street. Just call and ask about the Penn Law visit rate for that day.risa wrote:I might be interested in splitting a hotel room on Monday 4/8 (and possibly Sunday 4/7) if any ladies are interested... PM me. Wouldn't it be nice if Penn offered a reasonable travel subsidy, particularly when they're making you come to campus for an interview?risa wrote:I might be interested in splitting a hotel room on Monday 4/8 (and possibly Sunday 4/7) if any ladies are interested...
