That's not too far. I estimate 30 minutes from locking your door to sitting in class. Plenty of people walk that distance. I don't know a soul who lives south of the river, but you'll be close to your 1L job if you stay in Chicago and work in the Loop.
For others: if you want quality/value near campus, you need to find a condo that an owner is renting out. Those are hard to find, but they're out there on craigslist and they are the absolute best value in my experience.

For selling my body or of my willingness to pay for a decent space in Streeterville? Please clarify.

In Lakeview. You get so much more for your money, even just going up to Gold Coast.
I've done a lot of looking, maybe I can help out. What are your most important requirements?
Edit: Commute is 20 minutes on the express bus.

Yeah, I've pretty much decided that I can't justify paying for the sort of space you get in Streeterville. I don't mind commuting at all. My only must have requirement is a 24 hour security guy.

For the former, $2,000,000/nanosecond. For the latter, max is $1250 for a studio but I don't think that's happening in Streeterville for a decent spot.

We don't have that. We are just on top of a restaurant. Is security a big concern on the northside?
People renting out their condo is definitely the way to go if you want that, but you are going to have to pay a little more.

Short walk and a dishwasher.
I don't like the 20 minute bus commute, but I'm striking out in streeterville.
In San Francisco I used to just walk everywhere but I'm not sure that will work for me in Chicago weather.
Is biking around the city a realistic option btw? I haven't spent a lot of time there.

Check out Reside Living- I was looking at a 1 BR at Reside 707 in Lakeview- newly gut rehabbed with hardwood, granite countertops, etc, for $1360 before deciding to go with a Streeterville apt. They have a bunch of buildings in Lincoln Park and Lakeview.
http://www.resideliving.com I don't know if that apartment is still available but it was probably my next choice if I didn't hear back when I did from the apt building I ended up in.

I know that a lot of people bike in general and I believe there is a big bike trail that runs up the lakefront. If you want to be within walking distance, there are options in gold coast.

I'll second that. These looked really nice, but I think
they ended up being smaller than what we were looking for. they don't allow big dogs, which is why we didn't consider them.
Here's their list of studio apts:

No, not really. But being a girl living alone in Chicago - I'd just feel safer with 24 hr security, no matter how fat the security guy is. Thanks Samara, I'm just going to look around a bit more.

haha, I totally get that. I'm a dude, not living alone, and with a big dog, but I didn't know if security was an especially big concern in Chicago.

I tried my damndest to find a condo, but every single unit I was interested in was snapped up before I could get a realtor to even call me back. It was really frustrating.
Plus a lot of condos don't allow pets, and I have a cat. I lucked out(?) and got a small place in McClurg.

2. Yeah, you are right. You need to move north or west.

Anyone else a
browncoat Firefly
geek fan?
The Portage Theater in Chicago will be hosting one of the annual charity showings of
Serenity on September 8. I've been to one before; it's pretty fun to see it on a big screen and lol at the people who dress up like the characters.
(I may or may not have a cunning hat of my own.)

Unfortunately the theater is way the hell out in...some neighborhood I don't know. Irving Park/Portage Park, I guess?
