Of 2 things: 1. Being out in the middle of nowhere. (I guess I'll see how out in the middle of nowhere it is during ASW) 2. The economy. My spouse needs to work while I go to school and the Michigan economy is scary.Elliott_Smith wrote: Scared of what exactly?

What does your wife do? AA can be tough because it's one of the most educated cities in the US. There's a girl with a PhD who works at Starbucks...JoeMo wrote:Of 2 things: 1. It's my husband... but he's been managing a law firm (not at the attorney level) he manages the paralegals, legal aids, interns, paiges etc... And the more we look in A2 and the surrounding areas the less there is to apply to it seems like. Which is the only reason I'm still considering other schools in bigger cities because we can't afford to both be out of work for the length of time.blowhard wrote: What does your wife do? I really want to make it work so he's been applying to anything he can while we wait for the semester to start and of course, if I don't get into the schools in the bigger cities then A2 it is anyway.

Well, I'm biased but I don't think Ann Arbor is out in the middle of nowhere in most senses. It is a pretty nice sized and well developed city and close to Metro Detroit. If you mean out in the middle of nowhere in reference to NY, DC, and LA then I guess it is though.JoeMo wrote:Of 2 things: 1. Being out in the middle of nowhere. Also, the MI economy isn't really that bad. 3 more people out of every 100 are out of work than the average (6 more for Detroit) and for some sectors like science and engineering MI is actually better than general because of the volume of people needed. It might be harder for your husband since his job probably isn't one with a lot of turnover but I think there are definitely opportunities in the state and in the Ann Arbor / Detroit area in other management positions. I think the state's unemployment is so high because the number of jobs tied to manufacturing more than anything else.

There isn't going to be a lot of that in AA. Maybe look at jobs at the University in some kind of management capacity. Also...maybe look in Detroit? I commuted over the summer and it wasn't a big deal. There is a shared van pool thing that will pick you up and drop you off for a reasonable fee (much cheaper than driving every day). Otherwise, he's going to be looking at any kind of management job he can get for 3 years.JoeMo wrote:It's my husband... but he's been managing a law firm (not at the attorney level) he manages the paralegals, legal aids, interns, paiges etc... I definitely agree with the manufacturing thing. However, when you search for open positions there are never really any positions in the area. I mean, we know we have to put in the work so that's not a problem but it's still very scary.AreJay711 wrote: Well, I'm biased but I don't think Ann Arbor is out in the middle of nowhere in most senses. And as for it being in the middle of nowhere, that is exactly what I meant. As I said, that would probably change during ASW though.

Re: Michigan Law Class of 2015
yeah, he's definitely been looking for stuff at the university. That seems to be where the majority of the jobs are. I also think it's possible that when they're receiving his resume and seeing an out of state address they might be wary of why he's going there. Other employers that are not the University might think that he's relocating to go to school or whatever and they also might be afraid to hire him because they might realize the move is temporary.blowhard wrote:There isn't going to be a lot of that in AA. He has also been looking in Detroit and Lansing to see if anything sticks. I just wish that there was something I could do to help that process along. He also does realize that the type of job he had is not going to be easy to come by in Michigan so basically anything that's not Starbucks at this point would be ideal.

UMich offered me a really generous scholarship before I even asked for one. I absolutely love everything about this school, but I can't commit to it completely because I'm a stupid prestige/ranking-whore. Anyone else having this non-dilemma?

FWIW I completely understand the prestige whoring thing. Michigan is my dream school, but if I had applied and been accepted to Chicago at sticker (and had bigger scholly at Mich), I would've had some serious thinking to do.WhiteGuy5 wrote:UMich offered me a really generous scholarship before I even asked for one. Since I got waitlisted at Penn, I'm one step closer to full committal. Just waiting on Bezerkeley next week and if that doesn't work I'll be finally married to Michigan. It kind of feels good to have an end in sight.

Re: Michigan Law Class of 2015
As a fellow prestige whore, Michigan with scholly = way better than Chicago at sticker. Honestly, the only thing that's pushing me to NYU over Michigan is that it's in NY (which works out in my favor for a number of reason). Being in NY gives any school a natural edge over schools that are otherwise peers in every respect.UnamSanctam wrote:FWIW I completely understand the prestige whoring thing. Re: Michigan Law Class of 2015
After a long discussion with the husband, I have made the decision. Michigan in May it is. It doesn't even matter if Berkeley takes me at this point. Michigan was my #1 when this whole process started and I was only doubting it because I was afraid for his employment prospects but he seems to be less worried about it so A2 it is. Gosh, it feels so good to be able to call this cycle a wrap!
I'm really seriously looking forward to meeting a lot of you at ASW and even though I'm sure some of you will keep your anonymity it will be a pleasure to know that I'll be spending 3 years alongside some truly great people and others not so great (myself included).

I'm not sure yet. I know it's kind of selfish but it's the last school I applied to that I have yet to hear from so I kind of want to let it finish playing out just to see how it would've all played out. Regardless of their decision though I'm still going to Michigan. I already outperformed my numbers and that's great but I feel like after all is said and done my LSN profile might give some low LSAT high GPA kid next year hope and won't limit them to applying to the schools they'd be told on TLS to apply to.Kurst wrote:Congrats JoeMo. Also, stay in it for the best case scenario, you get (in and) good money at Berkeley and possibly use that for Michigan.JoeMo wrote:I'm not sure yet. Re: Michigan Law Class of 2015
If you've been awarded any money at Michigan, I would be sure to read their award letter carefully. It specifically says they generally don't like to "compete" (i.e. negotiate with you) for scholarships. What they give you is what they give you.Champion wrote:Also, stay in it for the best case scenario, you get (in and) good money at Berkeley and possibly use that for Michigan.JoeMo wrote:I'm not sure yet.
