Re: Northwestern Class of 2015 (now w/ 100% more Scarlet!)
Question...
I just received an email from Northwestern with a .xls attachment that is my "preliminary financial aid package." If the only thing it shows is loans does this mean that they are not offering me any scholarship money??

Well that is frustrating. I applied last year and got 90k. The only reason I withdrew was because there was political strife in the country I was working in and I needed to extend my term. I came back and I even took the time to do an alumni interview... Something I couldn't do last year. The alumni interview went beautifully, I have no doubt. I even booked a flight to Chicago for next week and now there is no way I am going to Northwestern. This was one of my top choices!

Has anyone else tried negotiating? I tried but the financial aid office was pretty adamant about not changing anything.crumpetsandtea wrote:Unfortunately, yes.Dato wrote:Question...

Honestly, I would have tried but I don't really have any other compelling offers. UIUC offered me even less than NU did, WUSTL only gave me 60K, and UMN gave me 84K but I didn't think they were particularly compelling for NU.cactuarX3 wrote:Has anyone else tried negotiating? I didn't try. And if this year they focused on need based then I should have gotten something, I'm poor as hell!!!!

I think they just have a policy of not negotiating (for some reason). I told them I got more money from Duke but they didn't give a shit, probably because they know Chicago >>>> Durhamcrumpetsandtea wrote:Dato wrote:Well that is frustrating. It seems like they put much more focus on need-based aid this year.

LOL!! And that sucks (not negotiating, I mean). Oh well, at least that means that they might have some extra $$ left over for the hold candidates!!cactuarX3 wrote:I think they just have a policy of not negotiating (for some reason). I mean, I say that because I'm not exactly in a position for merit aid, but I only made about $14-15K after taxes last year (with almost nothing in the bank) and I got $45K from them.nini11 wrote:I didn't try. so crumps, your 45k was need or merit based?

They don't specify in the award, but she's assuming her numbers weren't good enough for merit.Blumpbeef wrote:so crumps, your 45k was need or merit based?
I'm assuming mine was mostly merit, and that the people with similar numbers and bigger awards to mine had greater need.

Ya, that's what I figured on rereading it, and remembering the comment about need being a factor in deciding award sizes.rinkrat19 wrote:They don't specify in the award, but she's assuming her numbers weren't good enough for merit.Blumpbeef wrote:so crumps, your 45k was need or merit based?

LOL If that's it, well...yet another thing I have to thank TLS forchill wrote:We're in basically the same boat financially and numbers-wise. They gave me nada (to be fair, I went to the ER the day before the essays were due and wrote my final drafts while wiped out from that experience, so...). I think they were paying you back for being better advertisement for them than any of the glossy brochures they sent out.

Well, I'm sad to wave good-bye to my other options, but I'm committing to NU. My wife and I broke out the champagne last night to celebrate making a decision and she's started applying to jobs in Chicago. And I'm sitting gleefully on my lazy ass.
Very excited

Unfortunately, I won't be making it to ASW. I'll hopefully just be living there in a couple of months anyway, ya know.crumpetsandtea wrote:YAYYYYYYYY!!!!!!ConfidenceMan2 wrote:Well, I'm sad to wave good-bye to my other options, but I'm committing to NU. No, it's almost 800 miles. You'd spend more on gas/hotel rooms than a plane ticket.nini11 wrote:I'm in the process of buying plane tickets....is it feasible to drive from NY to chicago?

Do you really, really need Johann specifically? I would probably just email the admissions office general address: admissions@law.northwestern.eduDato wrote:how can i contact johann lee via email?

Agreed. If you want to get in touch with him directly, I'd suggest going to his Twitter or G+ page.rinkrat19 wrote:Do you really, really need Johann specifically? Anybody ask the financial aid/admissions office for an extension of the April 16 deadline? I wasn't planning on visiting schools until the second half of April for work-related reasons... I feel like I can make it work with my boss if I get a few more days from Northwestern.
Also, I just looked at a map. Has Chicago always been that far from California? Somebody please tell me this is going to be okay?
