I managed to negotiate a small increase, but I heard back almost immediately. So I have a feeling if you're waiting a long time to get a response, you probably aren't going to receive good news.

However, they're still working hard on setting tuition and financial aid awards, so maybe once they have a better idea of where their budget stands, they'll be able to give out more awards.

Also, from what I gleaned from the 2014 thread, financial aid packages won't be sent out until mid/late May. Doesn't look like a ton of time to mull things over before a final registration commitment is due.

I was very excited when I received a letter in the mail from UHLC last week. I was hoping it would be more scholarship or other good news- but instead it told me to get some shots. Ugh.

I was able to negotiate a $10,000/yr increase with some pretty good leverage, and heard back within a few days. Good luck to you!

Can I ask when you asked and how you phrased the request? I got another great offer this week and I am considering trying again... I wonder if any money has freed up?

I originally asked in early March w/ my best leverage being my Baylor scholarship I was granted about a week later.

I then received scholarships from other schools, including SMU, and I e-mailed them a few weeks ago and should be hearing back soon.


Best advice is let them know UH is your number one choice and it is only the price that is making this decision hard.

Hey guys, I am applying to law school next fall and UH is pretty high up on my list because I have family in the area, I have some legal connections in Houston, and my girlfriend just scored a killer job nearby. My GPA is 3.8 and I am LSAT PT'ing in the 167-170 range, just wanted to ask what you guys thought my chances would be for $$$ since many of you are going through this with UH right now. Sorry if this is not the right forum for this question I am a TLS noob haha. Best of luck to all of you next fall.

I've seen some people with stats that good in the Part Time program get pretty decent scholarship offers (15k a year), but the Full Time program is more competitive. I've also heard a lot of groaning about how 'stingy' Houston has been this year. It's likely you'll get at least some scholarship money, but it may not be as much as you're hoping.

That said, keep studying! If you get above a 170, I'd say you've got a good chance to land a decent scholarship, but its also likely that next year tuition will increase (as it didn't this year), and your scholarship will be worth relatively less.

Thanks for the reply sjwest. That news is, unfortunately, what I was expecting since I have always heard that UH is notoriously stingy with scholarships. I am hoping to get in to UT with a little money and use it to leverage. Regardless, thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

Our GPA is almost the same but if you score where you are practicing then you will for sure get money. My guess is they will give you 10k to start off with but you can easily negotiate up. The key with UH is negotiating.

Completely disagree with sjwest's assessment. If you maintain a 3.8 and do as well on the LSAT as you have on your PTs, you WILL get significant scholarship money from UH (relatively significant though, as UH is kinda stingy with scholly). Both those numbers are well over UH's 75th percentiles. You don't need a 170+ do land a scholarship from UH, though it wouldn't hurt.

Sounds like you two are asserting the same thing.

Point is- with those stats you would get waaaay higher scholarships at SMU or Baylor than you would at UH- even relative to price of tuition.

My guess, based on next to nothing, would be that the class of 2015 graduate w/ tuition around 32k.

No posts for a while ... I already posted on the "accepts/waitlisted/etc." board, but I was admitted two weeks ago. UH was really my only choice, considering I didn't have the LSATs for UT, the grades for a merit scholarship anywhere that doesn't suck, or the $$$ for SMU or Baylor (not that I'd EVER go to the latter - anyone considering such a decision has clearly never spent any substantive time in Waco).

To cut-and-paste what I posted on the other board: like many others I haven't heard anything yet on aid levels, but what concerns me is my understanding -- and I'm hoping someone here can clarify if it's accurate -- from both what's posted on the UH Web site, and also in my correspondence with Laura Neal in their financial aid office, that I can only get $1600/month beyond tuition/fees for living expenses. That's not seriously true, is it? Assuming I lived off-campus, an apartment would eat up at least half of that amount alone. The weird part is that Laura said the following: "If you live at Calhoun lofts, I can increase your budget to reflect that cost to allow you to borrow more in a grad plus loan." Does this seriously mean I can only get additional financial aid to cover housing if I live in the outrageously overpriced and tiny (albeit convenient) Calhoun building with a bunch of undergrads? I'm not looking forward to commuting, and I already know from Houston friends (and UH undergrad attendees) that the parking situation is hellish, but $5,500/semester for a 500 sq ft apartment just seems f'in ridiculous. Not sure if anyone else here is familiar with the building's history, but it was a $100 million+ boondoggle developed during the economic bubble, and was originally supposed to have ridiculous amenities like valet parking (at an on-campus state school dorm!!). It was also originally planned solely for grad students, and even though it doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere on the UH Web site, they've been letting undergrads live there since they couldn't find enough grad students to fill the 950 or so apartments (though apparently they're on separate floors).

Anyway ... just curious if anyone else has had similar feedback. I'd MUCH rather live someplace like the Heights than on campus, if only for sanity's sake, even taking commuting into account. Oh btw 2012-2013 tuition has been posted, and it's right around $30K (in-state).

Just found out I have Saturday off so SO & I are going to rush down there for a day to look at apartments. Any last minute suggestions of complexes we could check out? I love the Montrose area but haven't found much online that we like. Gracias

I'm headed to SMU, but Mrs. BVest was UHLC a few years back. Her best place, IMO, was the Lofts at the Ballpark. Kind of a cool location, plus pretty much a straight shot to campus. She also lived 1 and 2L at the Post midtown, which was also pretty much a straight shot. Both were 10-15 minutes driving.

I can't recommend a place but Montrose area is great. Make sure to eat at Barnaby's Cafe off of Gray St.

Sometime in June my SO and I are going down to hopefully a find a place in Montrose/Midtown/Rice Uni or possibly Downtown. If all else fails we might end up living at the Calhoun Lofts together. However, neither of us want to live there.

Yeah, sorry, we haven't been there for a few years, so I'm a little out of it as far as what rents are in those spots.

A friend of mine had a place in the Ventana, which at the time was kind of on an island of its own in a run down part of midtown. Don't know what it's like now (but it's right by the light rail for access to other stuff)... and real close to Breakfast Klub.
