Re: Northwestern Class of 2015 (now w/ 100% more Scarlet!)
Just got an email addressed to deferred students, reminding us that we have a third (third!) seat deposit due in April and asking if we're actually still on board for Class of 2015. WHY YES, YES I AM!

Can we create a spreadsheet just for who all is going to ASW?

I think there's only one person on the original spreadsheet who isn't going. Close enough? Or do you want one with less identifying info that we can link to publicly here?emkay625 wrote:Can we create a spreadsheet just for who all is going to ASW?

Hmmmm. I think I want it to have like date arriving/where staying etc. Does that make sense?rinkrat19 wrote:I think there's only one person on the original spreadsheet who isn't going. Close enough? Makes sense to me. I think we can probably just use the original spreadsheet we have for that since there's only one person not going.emkay625 wrote:Hmmmm. Although I am not 100% decided on NU (BUT it is the only school that can take me from Michigan so far), I am a Chicago native and went to school in Chicago for 4 years, so I thought this might help:
Neighborhoods:
Link to click on neighborhoods and see what's around
--LinkRemoved--
About River North/other Loop-esque areas: be warned. Many restaurants/stores close around 7, so if you are a night person, get ready to make friends with 7/11 and other convenience marts. I worked in a store on mag mile, which closed at 7.
Includes price ranges:
http://www.apartmentsavvy.com/neighborhoods.htm
Transport:
Other than train/bus, there is ALSO the NU Shuttle. It comes from Evanston and makes at least a few stops in Rogers Park before stopping at the downtown campus (where the law school is). I'm sure a quick call to the school would confirm stops so you could add those places to your list of livable neighborhoods
Food:
Besides the pizza (for deep dish, it's lous or else ginos), the popcorn (garretts):
Goose Island-taste local beers! There's one very near Wrigley.
Crisp-in Lakeview, best chicken wings I have EVER eaten. Crispy on the outside but moist on the inside. Korean-style.
Molly's Cupcakes-Lincoln park moist cupcakes, some with fillings. During ASW, they won't have it but mint velvet is my favorite. Popular ones include Cookie Monster (filled with cookie dough), Peach cobbler, and Cookies and Cream. They won a Cupcake Wars and opened up a shop in NYC. (We also have Crumbs and Magnolia now in the loop)
Aloha Eats-next door to Molly's. Hawaiian-themed, with spam musubi, different katsus and teriyakis.
Del Seoul-down the street from Molly's (Man do I spend a lot of time on Clark). Korean themed tacos.
Portillos-there is one downtown. For the Chicago hot dog. Dessert- chocolate cake, cake shake or the Chocolate Eclair Cake.
Bongo Room-One location in Wicker, one near the red line stop on Roosevelt. My favorite brunch place.
Joy Yee Noodle-chinese food, but better. Locations in chinatown, Evanston (by NU UG!), UIC
San Soo Gab San-Korean BBQ in Lincoln Square
Garcia's-real Mexican food. the Burritos are huge. Lincoln Square.
Kuma's Corner-supposedly the best burger in the City. Wait can be ridiculous.
DMK Burger-Truffle. Oil. Fries. The burger was good too. Lincoln Park.
Hot Dougs-exotic hot dogs. Wait is also ridiculous.
Posting about all this food is making think I can't leave...
For Crumps, since you're gonna be here for awhile here are some drink specials
Drink
Kit Kat Lounge- half off Martinis Tuesdays! (Bring cash to tip your cross dressing entertainers) in Boystown
Blue Line Lounge and Grill-$5 Martini Wednesday. $4 mojito/$3 Sangria pint Thursdays in Wicker Park
...Can anyone help this list out? I realized it is only 2 lounges long lol.
See you all at ASW!

I need to add one place to the food list:
http://www.grangehallburgerbar.com/
Grange Hall Burger Bar. The friend I stayed with in Chicago took me there the night before my interview. It is the best meal I have ever had. Delicious.

Ok friends. Now that I'm tipping over 70% sure on NU, let's talk coats. I'm from the Midwest but I've spent the past few years in the land where the sun never stops shining. My current coat, left over from my Missouri days, is very similar to this:
http://www.bluefly.com/Via-Spiga-black- ... detail.fly
Will I need something warmer than a wool Coat? A puffy, ugly, wintery thing?
Eta: wht about Adding a thinsulate layer under my coat? something like this? http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/66109?feat=610-GN1

thinsulate will help-also underarmour for leggings! The fleecy ones are the best. Jeans can get cold on the inside.franklyscarlet wrote:Ok friends. Even if I'm from here I still get cold very easily, so if i wear a peacoat like the one you have, I'll wear this:
http://www.express.com/cable-knit-cocoo ... /index.pro (not selling it right now)
on top of another sweater lol. blocks out the cold.

Ok, caveats: I'm a snowboarder, and a fashion retard, and am more likely to favor comfort over fashion.franklyscarlet wrote:Ok friends. Now that I'm tipping over 70% sure on NU, let's talk coats. IF that LL Bean jacket physically fits under the wool coat (no guarantees, especially since LL Bean stuff seems to be cut for middle-aged women so it isn't super fitted, in my experience) the combination would probably be warm enough for most cold days. If it doesn't fit, consider something like this, which seems similar and IS a very feminine fitted cut: http://www.rei.com/product/836160/the-n ... erralID=NA (I just bought that. Love it.) But the wool coat outer layer is still not waterproof.
I, personally, have a closet full of coats actually intended for terrible weather by North Face, Columbia, etc. (I buy coats like most women buy shoes.) Even my more "city style" peacoat is not wool, it's waterproof technical material, fleece-lined, by Mountain Hardwear. There is, I swear to god, a reason those brands exist. They're NOT just for snowboarding and climbing mountains. So if you want advice on ACTUAL winter coats, I am all over that.

ETA: and I second someone's suggestion of Under Armour long undies. I wear them snowboarding and they are the shit.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
