FWIW I liked her as a prof and enjoyed the class. She is a prof who is squarely in her students corner.

well i agree with this as well.lisavj wrote:FWIW I liked her as a prof and enjoyed the class. She is a prof who is squarely in her students corner.
she's definitely among the nicest of the professors (they're all nice, though), and she really tries her best to help her students.
problem is, she's terrible where it counts. i basically learned torts on my own; her lectures were just messy and useless, imo.

Dodson is new at Hastings this year. You might have a better chance hitting up the william & mary boards to see if anyone there had him.surfSD wrote:I know this is a long shot but do any of the 2Ls or 3Ls have have their old syllabus for Crim- Lee, Property-Shwartz, or Civ Pro- Dodson?

Happy Statutory Elective Registration Day everyone!
Apparently, Tax filled up in the first 5 minutes. The rest are still accepting students. Based upon the number of people who have registered for the classes in the first 40 minutes, the order of class popularity is:
1. Tax
2. Education
3. Government Legislation
4. Employment
5. Environmental
The lack of popularity for the Environmental class might be a bad sign for the students/faculty who were advocating for a new concentration in Environmental law. I am surprised at how much interest there was in Government Legislation. Government Legislation is a new class this year. (The professor was previously at Georgetown.)

I am sure the low enrollment in Environmental is more an indication that people have heard how difficult the professors are, namely, the smiling assassin.apollo2015 wrote:Happy Statutory Elective Registration Day everyone!

Re: Hastings Class of 2015
That's a fair guess. The 30 hour take-home exam/paper for Environmental sounds hellish.
Conversely, everyone keeps selling Education as the easy class. The downside of Education is that the curve is tight, so there is supposedly not much difference between the Bs and the As (or the Cs). The upside is that everyone gets to put in much less effort than they would for the same grade in one of the other statutory courses.

Thank goodness they got rid of Boswell's immigration statutory class. Just terrible... and a pity too because I had a high interest in the subject.

It was my least favorite class, my worst grade, and I too thought of going into immigration before I took the class. lololol.Mick Haller wrote:Thank goodness they got rid of Boswell's immigration statutory class. Just terrible... and a pity too because I had a high interest in the subject.

same here!! I still don't get what I did wrong. And the class didn't even cover the interesting stuff, like helping people apply for green cards and applying for status adjustments. Things you'd actually do in this field. Instead it covered the rare instances like asylum.ilovesf wrote:It was my least favorite class, my worst grade, and I too thought of going into immigration before I took the class. lololol.Mick Haller wrote:Thank goodness they got rid of Boswell's immigration statutory class. Boswell is an expert in that field but he seems to put no effort into teaching. I even overheard him complaining to another professor about having to teach the 1L course. Well it looks like he won that fight, and I think everyone is better off.

Legislation isn't a new class, although the professor is new. That course used to be taught by Ethan Lieb, who left for Fordham I think.

Oh, it wasn't offered to 1Ls last year. Had it been, I definitely would have taken it.hiima3L wrote:Yep.Mick Haller wrote:Legislation isn't a new class, although the professor is new. That course used to be taught by Ethan Lieb, who left for Fordham I think.

I like Boswell and Immigration. He's really helpful if you talk to him during office hours or over email.
I'm biased, if it wasn't for that "A" I wouldn't have been able to transfer

I went to his office hours like 10 times with practice essays and all he ever did was tell me I was doing well [when I was not] and never offered any sort of help or real advice. He's really nice though, I like him a lot as a person.kapital98 wrote:I like Boswell and Immigration. He's really helpful if you talk to him during office hours or over email.

If you're talking about the person I think you're talking about: Students last semester should have known how tough that class is. It was his second year teaching it and his first curve was *tough*. Nice nickname though.

Did Hastings throw a pot of money at everyone today, or was that just for 1Ls?

If any of the people from sections 2, 3, or 4 are still here, I am curious as to how many people in your sections dropped out prior to finals.
For Section One the bodycount was 2 for sure, and probably a 3rd guy (unless he was one of the UCSF MSLs).
Edit:
And to any of our 2Ls/3Ls/etcs, I'd be curious to hear what the attrition rate was for your sections at this point during your 1L years.

Section 5 (hey, we don't exist anymore...) lost at least 1 person before finals. Maybe 2?apollo2015 wrote:If any of the people from sections 2, 3, or 4 are still here, I am curious as to how many people in your sections dropped out prior to finals.

It's not until after grades come back that people start dropping like flies. Expect to hear a lot of "It's been fun but I'm leaving" messages on Facebook after grades come back. Our section had maybe 5-7 people drop once the second semester started. Idk, SF would probably know more than me.
Oh, and most of the gunners shut up

C/O 2012. I had 3 friends drop out--2 right before, one after he knew he completely bombed the first 2 finals. I can remember a few more who dropped out, one right after fall, a couple after 1L. So I think it was about 6 people total from my section.apollo2015 wrote:If any of the people from sections 2, 3, or 4 are still here, I am curious as to how many people in your sections dropped out prior to finals.

I had a "2 C's and drop out" policy first year. Turned out to not be needed but it was in place. Had $20k debt after first year figured I could work it off at starbucks if i sucked at the law...

I was section 4 last year, and I definitely remember that we had one person drop out before finals, but the bigger hit came at the start of second semester. I also know that there was at least 1 guy who did like the first week of 2nd semester classes only to decide to drop out as well.apollo2015 wrote:If any of the people from sections 2, 3, or 4 are still here, I am curious as to how many people in your sections dropped out prior to finals.

I'm somewhat curious as to why people drop out before finals even take place...it's like you've already paid your money, why not take the chance?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
