LSS is a very important course. Your grade in LSS can affect internships and future employment, so I would try very hard to get a good grade in that class. That being said, there will be less than 25 people in your LSS class, and it is subject to the curve. That means (for us at least) there was only one A and a couple A-. Accepting that one will not likely make one of the top grades, it is important to produce a solid writing sample. You will submit a writing sample when you apply for internships and bid for on campus interviews. No, you do not have to submit your writing sample for every internship or bid, but potential employers will be able to your LSS grade on your transcript. Our professor assigned a lot of reading and citation exercises. The reading was BS, but the citation exercises were helpful when submitting our writing assignments. You will have a lot of time to work on your graded writing assignments, but don't procrastinate. On a positive note, LSS will probably end early in the semester. Our final and memo were submitted by Thanksgiving the first semester, so we were able to focus on preparing for finals over the break.

This could all be meaningless. LSS could be a very different type of course. However, it will still be the course that produces your writing sample, and the grade will hold the same weight to potential employers. Also, now that it is a three hour course in the first semester, it has a heavier weight on your overall GPA (which is very important for PT students especially - you will be ranked on your GPA at the end of the Spring semester, so you're looking at just 21 hours).

I was there yesterday and didn't think it was too bad. I'm convinced nothing could have been worse than last summer in DFW.

Yea its been downright pleasant the last few weeks compared to last year.

Sorry :( The humidity is particularly bad lately because it has rained literally daily for the last 2 weeks. No time to dry out.

I was kind of expecting it but got here and wow. I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Mine's up!

Trying to figure out what the number next to the course number is. I guess section, but it doesn't correspond to the sections listed in the Fall 2012 Course listings.

Edit: Nevermind got it! Click enrollment rather than looking at it through the Student Center

LSS - Simpson
Property - Vetter
Civ Pro - Bruhl

Ah yes. This may be it. Just so you know, you can get this shot at any pharmacy, you don't have to make an appointment with your Doctor. Shoot, I got mine at HEB.

Now that we're officially enrolled, you can probably upload a photo to put on your ID, rather than waiting in line to get it. 2Ls say they might even be ready by orientation and save you an extra trip to central campus.

Edit: Nope, still no cougarID, only Peoplesoft.

Also, whoever I told books would be less than 500 dollars, I'm starting to reevaluate that. Some of the LSS books I couldn't find for less than 60 EACH, even used. I think I've dropped 200 bucks on that course alone.

I have a group of CDs called Interactive Civil Procedure that Professor Hoffman did in 2007. The information on them is not very in-depth, but it's a decent summary of each topic covered even if some of it is outdated. Professor Hoffman LOVES to have his favorite phrases/Hoffmanisms parroted back to him, so I used the CDs to help with that. Anyway, the CDs are free to anyone in Section B who wants them. They would be of very little use if Hoffman is not your Civ Pro professor.

If anybody wants a rundown on Hoffman, Zamora, or Evans, I am happy to provide my opinion. They are all three great professors, and they each have their little quirks.

Book cost summary: All prices including shipping.

Property
Estates in Land & Future Interests (used): $31 VS $45 LIST
Perspectives on Property Law (used): $13 VS $56 LIST
Property casebook (used, old edition - per prof): $24 VS $110 LIST (If you have to buy the newer edition, expect to pay much more)
Law and Economics in a Nutshell (used): $6 VS $90 LIST (Not required but professor recommended supplement, old edition)

Civil Procedure
Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (used): $19 VS $28 LIST
Civil Procedure Examples and Explanations (used): $19 VS $37 LIST (not required, but recommended highly by other students)
Civil Procedure casebook (new, 2012 ed.): $101 (LIST)

Lawyering Skills and Strategies
Green book (new): $17 (LIST)
Blue book (new): $31 (LIST)
Drafting contracts (used): $57 VS $62 LIST
Legal Writing & Analysis (new): $72 LIST (used were maybe $10 cheaper, and I wanted a clean copy)
Interactive Citation Workbook for the Bluebook (used): $20 VS $35 LIST

Bonus
Getting to maybe (new, kindle ed.): $23 (LIST)

Total: $433 VS $703 LIST

Also, I started shopping a few weeks ago because I had a few slow days at work, and part timers only have one section, so I already knew my profs. Don't want to make anyone feel like they're behind, or assume I'm a super overachiever. I'm just broke and wanted to buy as much as I could used via Amazon. I think my books are so much cheaper than list because my Property professor is recommending we use an old edition of all of the required books. That saved me easily $150 bucks.

The Richard Freer supplement Hoffman assigns is good enough, just pick up his quotes from listening to lectures in class.

And if someone wants an alternative view of Hoffman, Zamora, and Evans, you can always message me.

Nope you have to pay the fee bill or enroll in a payment plan by 5 PM on the 21st though. I wonder if they disburse the money by then or if its like Tech where they hold onto all the money for as long as possible wringing every piece of interest out of it before they release the funds.

Are any of you guys in the FT program planning to work while in school? The UH policy is no more than 15 hrs/ week for 1st year students, and no more than 20 hrs/ week for the others.

No. I'm already taking out loans so I don't see how a small income will help. It will just add unneeded stress.

ETA- In case people were wondering it looks like if you applied for a GradPlus loan the process went through. It has now shown up on myUH.

The rare Double ETA- Any section Bers in here?

Hey all! Was curious if anyone had been able to purchase a parking permit yet. Any time I try to go through the website to get one it, 1) Makes me use a guest account (that is still associated with my PeopleSoft ID?) and 2) Only has summer permits available.

Anyone else try yet? Link: http://www.uh.edu/pts/

I think I heard or read in something that 8/1 would be the first day permits would be available.
