Hmm. Just got photos sent to me by the McClurg leasing office.
I guess when the website says "Your Apartment Features New Kitchens with Stainless Steel Appliances Including: Microwaves, Custom Wood Cabinetry, Stone Tile Floors, Breakfast Bars and Granite Countertops," what they actually mean is that MY apartment features white (probably veneered particle board) cabinetry, formica countertops and a miniature dishwasher, and someone else's kitchen looks like the one on the website.
That's a little disappointing, although it shouldn't be surprising.

It's actually quite disappointing. I was considering McClurg over others just for that kitchen. Mind forwarding me the pictures?rinkrat19 wrote:Hmm. Just got photos sent to me by the McClurg leasing office.

Unless you are independently wealthy or have several thousand dollars in savings to put towards your apartment, if you live in Streeterville then your apartment will likely both suck and be tiny.

I highly recomend not living in Streeterville. Overpriced, underwhelming, and nothing to do past 10:00 at night. Though Streeter's Tavern can be a pretty good time with the right people.Holly Golightly wrote:Unless you are independently wealthy or have several thousand dollars in savings to put towards your apartment, if you live in Streeterville then your apartment will likely both suck and be tiny.

So where should we be looking instead?
I feel like walking is the only viable means of transportation and I don't want to have to walk 20 minutes in the snow.

Chicago's public transportation is actually pretty damn good.Blumpbeef wrote:So where should we be looking instead?

Popular hoods (in no particular order):
1. Lincoln Park
2. Gold Coast
3. Lakeview
4. River North
5. River west
6. Ukranian Village
7. Wicker Park
8. West loop
That should give you a good start.

I chose river north after I saw what was available in streeterville.

From my quick glance at google maps it seemed like using public transportation was, realistically, a 20 minute commute. Is that inaccurate?

Depends on where you are coming from. I live in River West/Westtown, and 20 minutes is on the high side. If you aren't taking the bus around rush hours, it's more like 10-15.Blumpbeef wrote:From my quick glance at google maps it seemed like using public transportation was, realistically, a 20 minute commute. And in rush hour from there it can be just as fast to walk, which is ~35 mins or so.bjsesq wrote:Depends on where you are coming from. If all you care about is being near school, by all means live in Streeterville. If you care about basically anything else, pick a neighborhood you like the feel of/can find a good apartment in.

+1. I think Gold Coast or Lincoln Park are best because of location, though Lincoln Park is much cheaper and is probably a 20 minute commute. And if you have a bicycle you can make the ride in about 20 as well.bjsesq wrote:Chicago's public transportation is actually pretty damn good.Blumpbeef wrote:So where should we be looking instead?

Re: Northwestern c/o 2015 - leading the T14 in bacon consumption
For my first year at law school and my first time living in an urban environment with no car, that is exactly what I care about. I don't mind "commuting" for my social life if my walk to school is 3 blocks. (I commute 35-40 minutes by car right now and sometimes it's just soul-crushing to finally get off work and still know you're not going to be home for almost an hour. And that's a gorgeous drive through wine country.)Holly Golightly wrote:If all you care about is being near school, by all means live in Streeterville.
That said, it's irritating that McClurg has about 2 photos on the website that show the interiors of any units, and the photos are clearly not representative of all units. Not to mention that the "Your apartment features..." description doesn't have any qualification anywhere.
The kitchen isn't bad, especially compared to some I saw, but, it certainly does not have stainless appliances and granite counters. It does appear to have a decent amount of counter and cabinet space, which is good. (I saw apartments with perhaps a 1' section of counter. Where are you supposed to prep food, in the bathtub? At that size, I don't care if the counter is solid gold.)

I figured it would be a hell of a lot smaller in a studio, but assumed that the description meant they'd refurbed all units with similar materials, at least.

As one who worked in real estate for a few years, most studios have kitchens that are absolutely atrocious. Landlords and management companies never seem to spend any money on fixing up the studios, no money in it.rinkrat19 wrote:I know, right?Blumpbeef wrote:I want a kitchen that looks like the picture

Thanks for this. I got a couple to use in August. I figure I won't be needing it EVERY day, but I'll certainly want to go somewhere SOME days.Blumpbeef wrote:3 day CTA pass for $9 on Groupon, for people going up before school starts: http://www.groupon.com/deals/chicago-tr ... gn=4485850

Did you look at a map?NorthwesternorBust wrote:Anyone know where Aqua is? I'm starting to think I may have picked a place too far away? haha
The building looks like it has a skin disease. Not a successful architectural design, IMO.
Also, holy crap, how much are you paying there? Hope you have some money besides loans, duder.

haha, I like the design. I did look a map, it says 20 minutes to walk it, but not sure how accurate it is. Walked it myself but got turned around, haha.rinkrat19 wrote:Did you look at a map?NorthwesternorBust wrote:Anyone know where Aqua is?
