So I am still waiting to join the fbook group. No seriously. I had to double check that my tuition deposit went through and I was actually admitted to the school. I tried emailing Abigail (the mod of the group) last week, but Im assuming/hoping shes just busy with finals.

One day I shall join you all in the wonderful world of the facebook group. One day...



It doesnt mean much right now, but I want to join the group cause I am going to have to start looking for a roommate kinda soonish. If anyone sees this that might also be looking for a roommate, let me know. Im looking for a 2/2 in streeterville

But seriously, dinner parties for suuure. It's kind of awesome that we've been talking about it since before apps were even all submitted, and now it's pretty much the same group of people and we're all actually going to NU!!!

I don't know if y'all remember me, but I said I wasn't going to NU...and that was actually a lie. I'm going to attempt to defer for a year (my partner's going to NU, too, and we will save a big chunk of change by simply staggering our debt burdens so we're only accruing living expenses debt for 2 years rather than 3), but I'm going. I'm feeling pretty damn happy about it.

BUT: We're also going out of the country mid-June until (basically) August 1. We're planning on flying out in the first week of August to find an apartment, sign a lease, and then drive our stuff out, unpack, and get settled in. We're not interested in Streeterville-- we'd be happy anywhere from Gold Coast up to, say, Lakeview. We've both lived in vintage buildings since graduating college and are, frankly, ready for a unit that is clean, new (-ish-- just so long as the building is younger than I am, we'll be happy), and contains a freakin' dishwasher. It sounds like people think waiting until the first week of August to find a place is madness? Our only other option is flying out in late May. Wise future classmates, what do you all think?

I checked out one of their Gold Coast apartments at ASW and one of them may fit your criteria- all of their Gold Coast properties appear to be pretty comparable. This company has a lot of apartment buildings and they are able to do leases remotely. Also, they give Northwestern students a discount on first month's rent, so ask about that too.

This company has a lot of Lakeview apartment buildings as well as Lincoln Park and other areas that appear to be newly rehabbed and might also be worth a look. I have not seen any of these buildings but they at least look nice on the website. Hope that helps you (and anyone else looking)!

I checked out one of their Gold Coast apartments at ASW and one of them may fit your criteria- all of their Gold Coast properties appear to be pretty comparable. This company has a lot of apartment buildings and they are able to do leases remotely. Also, they give Northwestern students a discount on first month's rent, so ask about that too.

I was in one of their Gold Coast builds during law school (1120 N. LaSalle). I had no complaints (except price, but that was because it was a large 1BR).

I'm looking at 1000 N LaSalle and it looks like it fits my requirements well. It looks like it's in kind of an awkward spot with relation to transit though. Did you just walk to campus?

My gf bikes downtown all the time. There's a bike map that shows the best streets to use and all, so look into that. You probably want to avoid the major streets, but it would be pretty easy to do Dearborn to Walton to Dewitt or something. Keep in mind it's not good to bike in snow on sidestreets sometimes.

Yeah, being an L-shape away from school can be awkward.

I would leave the house 20 minutes before class generally. When I walked out the front door, I would look north on LaSalle. If I could not see a 156 bus, I would just start walking south, since I knew I'd hit Chicago before one came. Then I'd take the 66 east. Even if you end up walking the whole distance, it is a less than 20 minute walk (about a mile). On nice days when you WANT to walk, take Division east to the lake shore.

Ultimately I had a bigger/better apartment than all of my friends, for roughly the same price as all the people who were crammed into Streeterville studios.

This is what I'm looking for, while still being within reasonable walking/short biking distance of campus.

Also, 1000 N LaSalle allows dogs and has a private little dog park, which is a big plus.

I lived on 1117 Dearborn for 775 a month (large studio) and always studied on NU's campus. It's a 10-15 minute walk each way. Frankly, it did me good to be forced to get some exercise on a daily basis.
