Re: What is a staff attorney?
Staff Attorney at my firm is a dead end job and not something you want...low pay, document review (BORING)
Of Counsel is higher in pay and prestige then an Associate, but is not share holder in the firm (not a partner)
At my firm Of Counsel is again dead end job b/c you can not become a Partner and I thing that is the goal of most Big Law lawyers

Staff attorney's are permanent (non-temp) doc reviewer's.
of counsel could also be a semi-retired partner.

Re: What is a staff attorney?
so what's the diff between "of counsel" (the post-associate kind, not the retired partner/former govt agency head kind) and "non-equity partner"?

non-equity partner can be on the way to partner track at firms with multi-level partnership structures.

Depends on the firm. Yes, it is dead end, but I've also heard that some BigLaw firms pay ~100k for people that are doing 40ish hour weeks. No, you're not going to get rich doing it, but there are worse jobs. Just because it isn't the position for you, doesn't mean it isn't the perfect position for someone else (even, dare I say, someone who is smart and well educated).

Re: What is a staff attorney?
Staff attorney sucks because it's a bridge to nowhere. Associate is a bridge to partner.
Of Counsel are usually too experienced to be associates so it's their special position. Some Of Counsel tracks are partner, some are not.
Equity partners get a cut of the firm profits. Non-equity partners just crossed over from being an associate and just get salaries.

I believe they have voting rights, though, which is what differentiates non-equity partners (which can be intermediate or terminal positions, depending on the firm) from counsel positions (which can also be intermediate or terminal positions).araiza99 wrote:Equity partners get a cut of the firm profits. Basically if you are an equity partner then you are a full business owner (of a group). If you are non-equity then you are a junior partner.
Of Counsel also gets a different bonus structure. They get paid if they bring in clients.
Usually, Of Counsel people tend to be older and too experienced to be associates but way too overqualified to be staff.

Do of counsels work insane hours like partners do, or do they have a (generally) lighter workload?
