The New York Law Exam - studying tips

Post by Cafeconrum » Wed Apr 08, 2026 11:39 am

I failed the NYLE last year — retaking it now and wanted to share what I wish I knew.

When I was preparing the first time, I kept seeing people say the NYLE is “easy” or that you don’t really need to study — which is somewhat true, but I took that way too far. I went in thinking I’d just look everything up since it’s open-book, and honestly that didn’t work as well as I expected (I know it works for some people, just not for me).

The biggest issue was time. The questions are very hypo-based, and it’s not enough to just find a line in the outline — you need to spot the issue and get to the right section fast. I kept wasting time flipping pages.

Some takeaways from my first attempt:

Have a good tabbing system (this is obvious, but critical)
Be consistent — one color for deadlines, one for rules, one for exceptions
Use your time wisely — focus on securing the ~30 points you need and don’t be afraid to skip and move on. I definitely got stuck on questions because I thought I knew where something was — and it ended up being a waste of time.

One more thing — there were a lot of Civil Procedure questions. That section is ~40 pages, and I found it really hard to navigate under time pressure. This time I’m putting a lot more focus there — especially on tabbing Civ Pro properly (including subtopics).

The main difference in my prep now is actually practicing navigation, not just reading. I’ve been doing Civ Pro questions and working on finding answers faster. I’ve been using the NYLE Prep Lab website for that since it lets me practice by subject, which is helpful. I’m also planning to do their full mock right before the exam to test how well my tabbing system actually works (found them on IG - @nylepreplab).

From what I’ve learned, the exam is really 90–95% strategy and only a small part memorization.

Anyway — just sharing in case anyone else is in the same position I was.

Curious what worked for others.

It's not about how quickly you can navigate or get to the section, IMO, for me it was about taking the time to understand and absorb the very dense material at the outset. Strategy is 10%, memorization and concept mastery 90%.

Thanks for the tips! this is helpful.
I am taking the coming Septemebr exam, and keep seeing the exam got harder - anyone has view on it?
I started practice this week (but only studying like 4 hours a week) - from what I see so far it is really helpful to read ssections and then answer some questions to practice finding answers in the text (using the NYLE Prep Lab after your recomndation and find it helpful and budget friednly).
It really does not look like a memorization exam - mostly being able to find answer fast.

The September 26 exam was unexpectedly way harder than everyone claimed it is.
During the exam I told myself I wish I had studied just a little bit better than I actually did.
I saw now that people recommend studying the civ pro section well - I def agree
