Public Interest: Help Deciding?

Post by readyfortheworld » Thu Oct 29, 2020 4:57 pm

Hi everyone! Hope zoom school isn't getting everyone down too much. I wanted to get opinions on which to choose between two offers I received recently.

I got an offer to work at both the ACLU (as part of one of their special projects, specifically) as well as the LA public defender's office. I summered at a PD this past summer (virtually) and am very interested in pursuing PD work post-grad. What do you all think? Where would you spend the summer?

Does the LA public defender let you do substantive work as a 2L (e.g. conduct a misdemeanor trial, do arraignments, cross examine witnesses, etc.)? If so I would pick the PD office if you're serious about doing PD work. Many PD offices look for in courtroom experience and you didn't get that last summer, and probably won't get it at the ACLU.
