Too much 2L Fall?

Post by aliciacflorrick » Wed Aug 21, 2019 4:40 pm

Does this schedule seem too overwhelming for 2L fall? Secured BigLaw SA already, so I wouldn't miss any class or have employment-related distractions. I'm on a secondary journal without moot court. I've heard taking Evidence and Corporations together can be killer, but they both seem so important to jump on ASAP.

Evidence
Corporations
Income Tax
Legal Philosophy seminar
Judicial Externship

Other possibilities:
IP
Ethics
Admin Law

My rule of thumb was no more than two black-letter lectures in any given semester. This is doubly true if also doing an externship (unless the externship in question is known to be particularly light on work - IME most externships require more time than BL courses). Also, I wouldn't recommend doing five classes in a semester anyway.

So I'd drop at least one of your Evidence/Corps/Income Tax trifecta. Unless you are seriously interested in Legal Philosophy, I wouldn't necessarily recommend that seminar (if you're taking it for an easy grade, maybe rethink that - seminar papers can be a ton of work, especially if it's a topic that doesn't excite you).

I wouldn't rush to take Ethics during 2L. Better to prioritize other classes of interest - not all classes will be offered every semester, and you may not get in to the classes you want to take. That's not really a risk with Ethics - you can be pretty sure your school will make it possible for you to take Ethics during 3L.

QContinuum's advice is solid. I'll only add that Corporations and Income Tax can be done during the same same semester, as there's some overlap (actually the whole point of business planning is to minimize tax liability). Also, unless you're doing regulatory work in the near future, Admin Law is of no use to you at this point.

My $.02

Thanks - entirely agree. I'd slightly caveat the Admin being of "no use" point though, in that if OP is gunning for a federal clerkship, Admin tends to be very valuable (especially for CoA, and double especially for D.C. Cir.). But if OP is corporate all the way, then no need to take it.
