Mass Mailing for mid-size firms Forum

There is alot of info on TLS about how and when to start mass mailing apps for big law but does anyone have any insight as to when someone who is targeting mid-sized firms should start mass mailing those? Is it a good idea to first send out a "feeler" email to find out when the firm wants these apps? or is it basically the same protocol as big law mass mailing? Any help is really appreciated
