Re: When your LWR teacher hates you...
Sorry to hear you're having a bad experience - it sucks when you don't see eye to eye with a teacher. The two comments of hers in response to your email that you flagged, however, don't seem problematic to me at all. I think the best thing you can do now is just try and give her exactly what she wants - sucks, but I don't see another solution.

Re: When your LWR teacher hates you...
Could you provide examples? IMO, nothing here seems like your teacher actually hates you or is prejudiced against you.

Re: When your LWR teacher hates you...
Thanks for your honest feedback. That is definitely my plan with the next assignment. It's just frustrating when I feel like my efforts or lack thereof will have no impact on my grade, because she has already decided who she thinks I am. Again, thank you.bretby wrote:Sorry to hear you're having a bad experience - it sucks when you don't see eye to eye with a teacher. Re: When your LWR teacher hates you...
Wow - you went to the academic dean for this?
That is absolutely nuts. What in the world did you think that would ever accomplish? It sounds like you didn't even have a graded assignment yet, and yet you're in the deans office? The only thing in the world that would ever do is serve to make your professor hate you. And not because of your kid, but because you're complaining about something that sounds completely reasonable.
Whether or not a professor hates you is neither here nor there. Assuming a professor is stupid enough to grade you down for it is an insult to the professor (and in some cases, maybe a fair one since every law school does blind grading)
It sounds like she rescheduled class for when the most people could show up, not as a dig at you. And its a entirely fair point about your responsibilities and having a child. Its hard to make top 10% of the class at any law school and it often requires the time and dedication that are hard to give when you have a small human being who is completely reliant upon you.
As for her marking a section of the paper she called excellent either: 1) it wasn't all that excellent if she could make corrections, or 2) it was an excellent section but it needed a little rework.
How is it "obvious" she graded you unfairly? Because you didn't bother to get notes from anyone for a session that you had to miss? Say what?
My goodness, you are in the first semester of law school and you're already in the academic dean's office.....over THIS? Instead of taking your professors feedback (on all fronts), absorbing it, and trying to learn from it, you went to whine to the academic dean about how you must have been unfairly treated.
How in the world are you ever going to be cut out for the practice of law if this is what hurts your feelings?

These are fair criticisms, although maybe a little strongly worded. Thank you. Your perspective is valuable to me.rcharter1978 wrote:Wow - you went to the academic dean for this?

1. When I went to the academic Dean, I had received a grade on the assignment already, and it's a large portion of the final grade in the class.
2. I wasn't complaining to the Dean. I was inquiring about how to get an objective review and when that sort of thing is necessary. He asked if she had spoken rudely to me or insulted me, and I told him that no, she has her nothing but pleasant and professional.
I don't know of that improved your perception of me or the situation, just trying to clear things up. Again, thank you.

1. Fine, you didn't do as well as you'd like. 2. Just because you don't like your grade doesn't mean its not fair. An objective review is just an insult to your professor and her "objectivity." If she can point to the specific reasons why you got the grade you did, then whats the problem. Because you want a better grade and therefore you should get it?
No, frankly, it really hasn't. Someone gets a shit grade in almost every class, if you got the second to lowest grade, maybe, JUST MAYBE, its because you're not a strong writer in your FIRST SEMESTER of law school and there are areas for improvement. It sounds like, instead of asking her how you could improve and become a stronger writer -- you went to the academic dean and started to whine. And make no mistake of it, thats its exactly what it was. An "objective review" is code for saying that you think the professor fucked up grading because she is biased against you.....which sounds like BS. If you didn't think she fucked up the grading, you wouldn't need to ask for an "objective review."
We're not all the special-est snowflake to have ever fallen in the forest, you're not going to just get great grades because you really want them, and NOT EVEN because you worked really hard. The person who gets the lowest grade in your LRW class probably worked hard on their paper too.
But instead of taking her advice and working with her to improve....you ran to the academic dean? I just can't.

Re: When your LWR teacher hates you...
I do agree that the 2 points she made in response to your email were perfectly reasonable. It's really common for people who get feedback to feel like what they get marked down for isn't what they were told about in previous reviews, but sometimes that's just the case - it's impossible to cover everything in every review, and sometimes making changes reveals other issues.
And I also don't think she put you on blast by referencing your question in class - that seems perfectly reasonable, and if other people felt the same way they would have said yes. And I think you're reading too much into the "if you read carefully."
I do think it's tough to do law school with a kid and some profs can be weird about it. But the comment about needing to be at the top of the class could have been meant as part of an honest discussion about how you best negotiate that.
Graded LRW is hard because it feels subjective. But I think you may be reading a little too much into this.

Ok. I do think you have enough information to make that call. I wish you would be a little nicer about it, but I guess I asked for feedback so I can't really complain about the tone of it.rcharter1978 wrote:1. Fine, you didn't do as well as you'd like. Look, law school is tough, and if you take every bad grade you receive personally, you're going to have a bad time.
It seems to be a little late to be worrying about your professor having it out for you when you created that situation yourself. If anything, I would have waited until after she graded everything before going to the dean. But you can't do anything about it now, so just be the best student you can be and stop bothering your professor and dean

Agree with the others. I think it's all in your head. Misconceptions happen somewhat often in law school because of how stressful it is, especially 1L. I recommend keeping your head down, working hard on revisions, and trying to finish off the semester as best you can. Also, in the future, I would apply a beyond a reasonable doubt standard to perceived prejudice before taking action.

Agree with everyone else here that you're probably take this too personally. I get that LWR can feel arbitrary, but I'd pull back from the meetings with the Dean if I were you.
