Should I take Corporations when I absolutely won't do Corporate Law?

Post by hartfords » Tue Apr 19, 2016 9:45 pm

PI gunner. I don't foresee any circumstance under which I would be using Corporations. Even if there is, it would be very trivial. That being said, almost everyone recommends taking Corporations no matter what area of law you want to practice. Any insights?

Yes. It'll be super helpful for the bar.

When the time came to study for the bar, I was very glad that I took Corporations and Trusts & Estates, despite being crimlaw guy.

I don't think its necessary unless you're doing transactional practice or securities, but some of it is interesting.

Depending on the type of litigation you end up doing corporations can be helpful. I do commercial lit and having a basic understanding of fiduciary duties is very helpful.

I'm going to take a different approach and tell you to take corporations because of the increasing role corporations play in shaping tax and public policy - which absolutely DO affect your potential clients.

I'd take it. Depending on what kind of PI, you may find yourself on the opposing side of lots of businesses and it would be helpful. Or maybe you'll be helping small businesses form a business entity.

Even in PI you'll probably have encounters with Corporations and other business entities.

I didn't take Corps (or any other business classes) and have no regrets.

Take corporations. Unless, Bernie wins. In that case, don't worry about it.

I didn't take it but wish I had. I'm a pure litigator. If you're representing clients that sue—or are sued by—corporations, it helps to have the basic background that a corps class provides.

Corps certainly isn't "necessary" (no law-school class is), but I think it ranks pretty high on the list of classes that are worth taking.

Agree with this. If Bernie wins, consider taking bankruptcy instead.

You can teach yourself any black letter law subject if you need to. Don't take any class unless you think you'll enjoy it or you're applying for jobs and think that it will impress employers
