About 20 minutes after I learned my current 1L class rank, I found out that one of my fall semester grades went up. I asked the registrar when I would find out my new class rank, and the response was: there would be no new rank. Even though grades are subject to change until the end of the spring semester, the registrar only calculates rank once.
Is this a common practice at other schools? Thanks.

You should probably bitch to the registrar about this a little. I don't know if it's common practice, but it seems completely moronic to me. Like, why would your grade even go up? Is the professor unable to properly calculate exam grades?

Re: Grade change--change in class rank?
Yes, it's common for the registrar to calculate ranks just once per semester (or once per year or whenever it calculates class rank.) I think the reasons for this are obvious. If your rank goes up because of a grade change, then someone else's rank will go down. Other students already put their official class rank on resumes. You've got to freeze the officially calculated rank at some point on the calendar. It sucks for you, but that's the reality.
