3.1 after 3 grades @ UCLA. Biglaw?
Hey guys. I got 2 B+s and a B- at UCLA this semester, putting me at a 3.1 (3.0 is median). I was pretty disappointed with this result, especially because I'd like to shoot for biglaw.
I'll admit that I am not as educated as I'd like to be re biglaw, so if you could please direct me to the proper authorities it would be much appreciated.
Have I pretty much destroyed my chances at landing a biglaw job? Law review at UCLA is only through write-on, is law review necessary/helpful?
I'll certainly work to raise that GPA this upcoming semester, but it would be great to know where I stand and how I could gameplan. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Thanks for your response.NYC2012 wrote:How did you study this semester/how did you prepare for exams? Did you use supplements? Did you do LEEWS? How many practice exams did you take? Did you generally follow TLS advice? I always recommend for people to meet with professors to discuss where they went wrong on exams, even though it's uncomfortable. Sometimes it's just bad luck or not clicking with the exam question.
Your chances for big law are not destroyed. Law Review is a boost but it doesn't matter as much as grades and I know plenty of people who got jobs at OCI without it. From what I gathered at OCI this past year, you need around a 3.3-3.4 from UCLA to be considered at most big firms, and you need a 3.5ish to feel somewhat "safe" (no one is really safe). I know a lot of people who didn't do great first semester and worked really hard to turn it around second semester, but you have to figure out where you messed up first and address those problems.
My study regimen consisted mostly of doing the next weeks readings on the weekend prior. I ended up not using supplements. I did LEEWS but it felt difficult to apply to Ks, property, and crimlaw, so I didn't stick to it rigidly.
I read the TLS articles written by Arrow and xeoh85, but if I'm being honest with myself I didn't put as much effort as those two. I ended up cramming a ton of knowledge into my head during the last 3 weeks of the semester, which may have led to my unsatisfactory grades. I honestly thought I did much better than it turned out, but I guess I'm in denial if I think I can get by with the effort I put in during the semester.

UCLA 2L - you still have a chance if you can raise your grades a bit. I had a 3.2 after first semester and got it up to a 3.3 by the end of 1L. I received multiple offers from OCI and will be at a V50 this summer.
Build your resume as much as you can and get a good summer job. Try for law review - always looks good. For more info on specific firms, you can look at career services on mylaw/ucla interview program/fall on campus interview program/gpa ranges for oci callbacks.
