Why doesn't Cornell have a better ranking
Full disclosure: I have no dog in this fight #3LOL@UVALAWL
1. For NYC biglaw, I would put it at #8 (maybe tied w/Duke, don't have stats in front of me)
2. For big law generally, on par with UVA Berk and Duke (though these schools have more clerks)
3. Geographic Placement: you're stuck w/ NYC; However, even though UVA has NY + DC, DC is tough as shit; ditto for Berk w/r/t SF; can't speak for Duke.
4. Anecdotally (I have a buddy there), it seems that few people actually strike out: they have a tiny class and by God does it work for them
5. Ivy Preftige
-signed UVA kid who would probably choose Cornell in hindsight (and while I'm not a star, I am comfortably over a 3.5 at this point so it's not like I'm vindictive against UVA, I got a big law gig Im happy with at a great V20 [don't worry its not W&C]

Re: Why doesn't Cornell have a better ranking
U.S. News rankings of 198 fully ABA accredited schools are based on the average of 12 measures described below:
Quality Assessment (weighted by 0.40)
-Peer Asseessment Score (0.25)
-Assessment score by lawyers/judges (0.15)
Selectivity (weighted by 0.25)
-Median LSAT scores (0.125)
-Median undergraduate GPA (0.10)
-Acceptance rate (0.025)
Placement success (for some reason, what matters the most is weighted by 0.20)
Faculty Resources (weighted by 0.15)
TL;DR, Cornell's relatively low ranking is almost certainly due to its low selectivity rates (probably a direct result of its location) and probably a mix of other factors. Placement success isn't really valued much in the US News rankings, which is why the majority opinion is to not follow USN rankings.

Re: Why doesn't Cornell have a better ranking
cornell doesn't have a better ranking b/c it scores fewer points than other schools according to the scale that usnwr uses
everything that matters (employment, cost, location, etc.) is highly individual. there is a huge gulf between a trust fund kid wanting nyc biglaw and a middle-class kid wanting to be a PD in cali
ranking law schools is futile

Placing Penn equal with NYU at number 6 is not anti-NYU trolling, it's reality.BigZuck wrote:Overall not a good thread. A+ anti-GULC trolling though.TFALAWL wrote:For what it's worth here is how I would rank T-14

While we wait, I'll give you a dose of real reality: the Penn bubble is about to burst. By 2020, Penn will be gasping for air, fighting it out with the likes of NU for T12 status. Believe me, Penn will soon long for the days when it was only one spot behind NYU.

Yes, I'm serious. I wouldn't jest about something as important as law school rankings.stig2014 wrote:You serious, Clark?rpupkin wrote:Coming soon to newsstands everywhere: The Kingpin101 Reality Rankings.kingpin101 wrote: Placing Penn equal with NYU at number 6 is not anti-NYU trolling, it's reality.

Don't get me wrong: Penn is, and will continue to be, a damn good school. But have you noticed what happened to Michigan in the 2010s? That's what's going to happen to Penn in the 2020s.

Re: Why doesn't Cornell have a better ranking
Interesting. Is it because of employment stats, or due to some kind of esoteric USNWR bullshit? Penn is one of my prospective schools for next year, which is why I'm wondering.rpupkin wrote:Yes, I'm serious.
