How to ask professor to do directed research?

Post by felinafelina » Mon Sep 28, 2015 1:05 pm

Hello,

I'm a transfer student and so do not know / have any connections with the professors at my new school. I'm writing a note and want to ask a professor to agree to do directed research next semester. Here are my questions:

1) Is it odd to ask a professor that you do not know? Or is this the norm?
2) How should I go about asking them? Should I go to their office hours, or email them?
3) When should I ask them? I'm still working on what my topic will be - will it be rude to ask without having a lot of work done yet?

Thanks!

My thoughts:
1) Not odd. I think a lot of RAs work with profs they know or did well in their class. But don't let that stop you.

2) Email may be better so that they would be prepared to talk with you about your subject, rather than expecting questions about class.

3) Not sure about this one. Probably flush out an outline at least.
