pros and cons of midterm
So, we're voting on a torts midterm, which will be 25% of our final grade (another 25% to class participation). I'n lobbying hard for no. I don't want the additional stress, but I think the majority is leaning toward having one. Need some advice on how to convince them otherwise.

Re: pros and cons of midterm
One of my 1L profs let us have a decent amount of control in how our midterm(s) were setup. Not totally unheard of.
Anyway, if you're super obsessed and bent on crushing your adversaries, no midterm is better because then finals will catch more of your classmates woefully unprepared for handling law school exams. But if you're just going with the flow and went to law school because you love to argue and it's America's great fallback option, a midterm might give you the kick in the pants you need to figure shit out before exams.

vote no. A midterm means you have to start paying attention and doing real work much earlier in the semester than you should have to.
Also, 25% of the grade is based on class participation? What is this, kindergarten?

Re: pros and cons of midterm
Given that one exam at the end of the semester is a shit means of assessing actual learning, pedagogically, holding people accountable for a midterm and class participation often helps people learn material better.
Of course, this would only matter if law school exams/grades were about learning material rather than about ranking people on a curve.
With regard to ranking on a curve, a midterm can be helpful practice before getting to the final - if you're missing how exams work, tanking 25% and then crushing the final is better than tanking the final. And if you're an exam savant, getting good grades on both puts you above classmates who take longer to figure it out.
You're going to have to learn the material covered one way or another, so whether you learn it for a midterm or for a final shouldn't be that big a deal.

Re: pros and cons of midterm
Pro: Know where you stand and improve your ability to perform well in every class before the stakes are really high.
Con: More work, gives an even bigger advantage to those who get it right away.
