I've never thought about myself and the forums that I frequent this way. I'd be really interested to hear some peoples' replies on this. I'll be checking this hourly for what I hope to be a stimulating, engaging, and above all, self-actualizing discussion.

I'm not really sure there is any elitism here. Really seems like people are just trying to help people achieve their goals. Paying sticker at Santa Clara is usually not the way to do that. It isn't elitist to say that a full ride at a T14 is generally the best path to financial success.

Why would it be bad to talk to law students and lawyers before, you know, becoming a law student then lawyer

What harm are you suggesting it causes? Specifically.

At its core, this site exists so people can express their opinions on issues relating to law school/law. I think most people who post here are well-intentioned based on their own experience. People don't always agree so people browsing for information often get to see points from both sides of certain debates.

Regarding your second paragraph, this site attracts certain people. Those people have very legitimate reasons for their opinions and enough experience to be confident that their opinions are well-informed. From an economic perspective, there are more people with JDs than available legal positions so some people will end up unemployed or without a job that utilizes their JDs. Posters here are often reacting to reasons that they think contributed to unemployment outcomes so people do not end up in those same situations.

Overall, I think TLS is helpful.

I think TLS is helpful and the only negatives are a function of the anonymity true of any online forum- people feel free to speak about things they actually have no expertise or basis in fact on the matter. But hopefully no single thread is the ending point for frequenters of the forum.

I doubt you will find the answer to this question on tls... there might be a slight bias.

most "pre-law" undergrads and people thinking about going to law school usually don't know shit about the legal profession, law school admissions, or law school in general. TLS helps to clear up many misconceptions.

also its just an internet forum who cares

So far I've been pretty shocked with how accurate a lot of the advice on this site is.

The original poster is not Ron Howard, I am sort of flattered.

but for TLS i'd be paying sticker at SMU or somethin similarly shitty. given my current law school situation TLS has been worth a third of a million dollars (tuition + loan interest). that figure doesn't account for future earnings that will (hopefully) be a result of me having attended a t14, something I wouldn't have done without TLS.

i didn't really study extra hard to get to a t14 -- maybe an extra 300-400 hours i wouldn't have otherwise done. TLS just made me realize a t14 is something worth studying for in the first place, given the alternative non-t14 career outcomes.

But instead, Megan Schade, Esq. informed you that you may qualify for admission and a full tuition scholarship per year to your namesake, so you couldn't turn it down. Thank you, TLS.

The "elitism" you see is simply a response to the practical realities law students face. For better or worse, law school is terribly expensive, and employment prospects are heavily weighted toward the top schools (this is especially true for the top firms that pay the big salaries). I for one think its absolutely ridiculous that someone from a reputable T50 or so school, should be treated so differently than someone from a top 20 or top 14 school. But, regardless of whatever we may think, employers have certain views and perspectives that we have no choice but to take into account when discussing these topics.

In other words, don't hate the player. Hate the game.

And I disagree that this site is elitist and narrow-minded with regard to how one can achieve success in law school. The reason the approach is the same is because, for the vast majority of people on this site, the goals are the same. So many are chasing "prestige", the highest tier of firms, the best clerkships, etc. Because they all self-select their way onto this site, you end up seeing the same goals (and therefore the same advice regarding approach to achieve those goals).

If a student came on here and said that its his goal to practice family law in his hometown somewhere in South Carolina, you really think we would be urging him toward huge debt at a T14 school, assuming that was a possibility for the kid?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
