How do you prefer to take notes as you read? Forum

I almost always read a hard copy, take notes in the book/article/etc., and then write the main points in electronic format for class discussion. However, I'm open to more efficient suggestions if y'all have them.

Side note: I read for every class because I want to, though I do use supplements/online briefs as well to round out my understanding. I just find that online briefs are a poor substitute for what we go over in class.

If and when reading, I might highlight if there's a highlighter out and within reach, or might put a star in the margin, but that's it.

Huge difference from 1L where I color-highlighted rather than briefing cases and read all the assignments up until the last few weeks of the semesters.

On the rare occasions I've taken notes as I read, it's usually something bare-bones like this:

Wagenseller

At-will employee refused to engage in lewd behavior on company trip. Fired later. Court (i) recognizes public policy limitation to EAW, (ii) holds that statements in employee handbooks can be part of employment contract, (iii) refuses to imply covenant of GFFD into employment relationship.

NOTES:
(1) Almost all states follow EAW. Montana is minority rule -- must have good cause.

After I brief the case, I'll have a separate section where I'll actually write down a mini speech summarizing word for word exactly what I will say if called upon to give the facts of the case etc. including moments of pause. I'll practice it in front of the mirror or in the shower a few times before class
