Can't sleep, sick. Should I miss class?

Post by Young Marino » Mon Sep 08, 2014 1:35 am

I've had a hard time sleeping lately and have to be up in a few hours to go to school. I slept about 2 hrs but got woken up by the sound of someone in the house watching tv and haven't been able to go back to sleep. I'm also dealing with a pretty nasty cold and feel like I'll be far from my best today. Should I just do my case readings now and go to sleep later and miss class? Has anyone ever missed class during 1L fall and still been alright?

You might as well drop out now.

ffs, stay home if you're sick. You won't be able to pay attention anyway if you're miserable, and you'll just stay sick longer. Get the class notes from someone. Everyone* in the history of law school missed some class fall 1L.

*not literally, but who the fuck cares.

A) Calm down, Francis.

B) Just stay home. Don't be the plague monkey that infects everyone else. If you're really worried, send a (short) email to your professor. They won't care, but if it helps you relax, go for it.

Stay home. Also, check to see if your school allows you to listen to an audio recording of classes missed due to illness.

Well I stayed home and slept a little bit. I feel so guilty for missing class though. A few buddies are emailing me their notes after class but it's not the same as hearing it from the prof. Is it really no big deal to miss a day of classes at this point in the semester? I hated missing class in UG and hate the idea of it even more now.

No, everyone is encouraging you to skip class in an effort to sabotage your entire future. Jeez.

Chill out or you're going to give yourself an ulcer.

There is the school of thought that if you are going to be miserable, you may as well go to class and try to make those around you sick/miserable as well..

This has the downside of those around you hating you, but on the upside you can save your absentisms for days you are feeling good enough to go out and enjoy yourself.

Stay home, ask friend for notes. Then return favor when they are sick.

Dan, here's the thing- you're attending a school with poor job prospects and you say you're gunning for PI. Therefore, your grades won't really matter, but your hustle absolutely will. You also don't really learn much of practical value in most law school classes, especially the 1L doctrinal stuff, so you're not really missing anything.

Instead of worrying about what you're not learning in class where you're out of class, you should be worrying about the fact that you can't network/hustle/build skills outside of class when you're in class.

Going to class is one of your biggest impediments to getting a job as a lawyer right now IMO.

Okay so I'm guessing it's not a big deal that I'm missing today's classes then? I'm still doing the work from home. And grades do kind of matter. I need to remain top 60% to retain my scholarship.

you need to RELAX. Missing class once in a while is fine. But your stress level is not. Do not let this stuff mess with your head this early in your law school career. You know yourself -- you know when you are slacking and when you genuinely need a break.

FWIW I missed 4 days of class my fall 1L semester and still did very, very well. I think that is what you want to hear.

How did you still manage to do well? When the professor talks about what I read in the case book he/she clears it up so well that I really get full understanding of it. I couldn't imagine getting through the semester missing "a ton of class"
