Housing in DC for GULC student?

Hi I'm looking to pay around $800-$1100 for a room. Any advice on safe neighborhoods to search in is appreciated.

Any other criteria besides safe? Do you want to be walking distance from school? Do you prefer a quieter neighborhood or do you want a lot of nightlife?

Contrary to what people who haven't lived there seem to think, DC has plenty of safe neighborhoods. You have to narrow it down a little.
