How do recruiters look at grades
Hi guys,
I just have a question, being an inexperienced and naive rising 2L and all.
I have 6 As, an A-, and a B- as my grades for my 1L year. This B- was (1) completely unexpected and (2) takes me from top 2% to top 15%.
Do employers only look at ranking/GPA or will they look at my 6 As and an A- and see the B- is why my GPA is what it is, not because I overall performed at my GPAs level in every class?
This is a simplistic and possibly stupid question but I wanted to ask people who know more about this process than I do.
I'm at a T14 if that matters, so I'm talking about biglaw offices looking at my grades. I imagine many of these firms are completely inundated with applications and thus would be prone to simply throw out anything that doesn't pass the first glance ranking check. I'd be interested in information on other employers as well.
Thanks.

Humblebrag much? Dude, you're top 15% at a T14. If a firm dings you, it won't be because of your grades (they really only care about GPA anyway). Your interviewer might ask about the B-, but only because the rest of your grades are so ridiculously good, it stands out. As long as you don't say something retarded in response (criticize the system, etc.), you should be fine.
You should be WAY more worried about how you come off in interviews. The content of your OP is definitely a red flag. Do you really expect me to believe you're genuinely concerned you're application is headed for the shredder because only 7 out of your 8 grades are A's, at a T14? If you don't realize how that statement comes off to others, you're socially retarded.

Not to say the actual content of your post is wrong or anything, but your last sentence is kind of ironic.WhiskeynCoke wrote:Humblebrag much? Dude, you're top 15% at a T14. This topic is the first and only post TC has ever made on TLS. And he joined on Friday. Think about it.

Thanks for the replies. Not a troll, just the name I use for forums and things like that where I don't want to be connected to other monikers elsewhere.
I'm mostly interested in proseuction but I applied to a few bigfirms just so that I don't lose out on any opportunities. So I don't know much about the biglaw process but I'm reading more on this forum and becoming more knowledegable on the subject.
I've only now started reading this kind of material after finishing 1L because when I initially started reading everyone's advice to do this and that for 1L I quickly decided that I would be better off just doing what I knew worked for me and not worrying about what others had to say. Now that that's over I'm starting to look at employment and I know nothing about it so I thought I'd start reading other people's thoughts again.
Of course I know, objectively, that one B- is not the end of the world. It did throw me for a loop when I first got it, so I wasn't sure if it ultimately mattered or not.

I mean in all fairness, if he is really concerned about working for a V10 v. a V100 or something, top 2% versus top 15% does matter.

Re: How do recruiters look at grades
one v10 firm told me after a mock interview that "my score was very good" after asking him a bit about that it came out that they have a formula based off of the number of A's u have and B's and then they give u a score. he wouldnt go into more detail than that

LOL if V10s only hired the top 2% of students at t14s they would be hundreds of people short to fill their sweatshops.Total Litigator wrote:I mean in all fairness, if he is really concerned about working for a V10 v. a V100 or something, top 2% versus top 15% does matter.

Useful heuristic: how employers look at school & grades = how law students look at vault rankings
Everyone agrees they're imperfect but when push comes to shove, people rely on them.
