I am currently studying for the bar. I received a letter today from the BLE informing me that they have made a preliminary determination that I "do not currently meet the standards set forth in Rule IV(b) (the "Good Moral Character" clause of the Character & Fitness requirement).
Does anyone have experience with receiving a letter like this? There is an invitation in the letter to contact the BLE to discuss a possible "stipulation of fact and agreement in lieu of a hearing." I'm not sure if that means this will likely be resolved informally, or if I am headed for a litigation process and need to get a lawyer.

Re: Texas BLE Preliminary Determination Letter - Character
While I understand you're looking for solace, please understand that the internet is not your best bet for that. You should be contacting a bar attorney tomorrow no matter what anyone here says.
No one here will have a magic pill that will justifiably make you feel optimistic about this. I know that's what you're here for, but in the end the best case scenario you'll get from this forum is a feel-good story and no actual help with your situation. Attorney. Tomorrow. That is all that matters right now.

Tanicus, your point is well taken and probably the right answer, so let me modify my request to be more clear:
I'm looking for others who have received a Preliminary Determination Letter like this. If so, how was it handled/resolved, and did you seek an agreement in lieu of a hearing with the bar? Did you proceed to the hearing process? Did you retain a licencing attorney, and if so at what point of the process?

Hire an attorney now. Like the prior poster said, it doesn't matter what anyone here says - hire an attorney now. Don't do anything, don't contact BLE, hire an attorney. Your law license is in jeopardy - make sure you make the right steps by hiring an attorney now. Being denied a law license for bad character is bad. You 100% need an attorney to clear this up, immediately.
