I'm getting my materials ready to apply to the PTO to take the exam. I had a couple questions for people that have recently gone through the process.
First, how much do patent courses prepare you?
Second, do you have to reapply to the PTO to retake the exam and pay all the fees again? Even if you take it twice in the 90 day window?

Re: Patent Bar Questions
I took the patent bar in March 2013 before the AIA changes (rushed into taking it for that reason) and failed with a 60%. I retook it in July 2013 with some of the AIA changes and passed.
As to your first question, I'm assuming by patent courses you mean patent law courses in law school. I don't know because I took the exam before starting law school in August 2013. I'm guessing it helps a little, but likely not much as I'm guessing patent courses don't talk too much about the MPEP, which is what you're tested on for the patent bar. It could help for some of the 103 and 112 questions as they cite to case law a little bit.
As to your second question, yes unfortunately if you fail you have to reapply and repay all the fees again, even in the same 90 day window. However, when reapplying, you don't have to submit all the information all over again (transcripts, C/F requirements, ext...).
