Ooof. Confess and though you'll still burn, you'll go to heaven once you're dead. Best outcome if you confess? Generally, a failing grade (goodbye good job that ever wants a transcript), a big red note in your law school file about academic dishonesty, having to mention it on C&F - probably red flagged once you try and get admitted, at the least you'll get called in for an investigation by C&F. And honestly, cheating on an exam, I don't see how you don't get expelled, but maybe you get credit for confessing. Also, you're a rat now, because you're going to rat out your friend. Cheating is bad.

Worst outcome with silence? Expulsion, plus everything else listed above, and probably denied admission to the bar for a number of years at least, maybe forever. Not sure about that last part, but you are in a world of trouble.

You need to assess why you did it, and assess yourself. I have doubts about your integrity, you probably shouldn't be allowed to be a lawyer. This wasn't even ambiguous, it was flat, knowing cheating by you both. The right thing to do is confess, but if you're not going to confess, perhaps you should stop discussing it on a public forum that (probably) logs IP addresses. Also, this has to be a flame, who confesses cheating on the internet?

OP, you're in hot water, and hardly anyone here can do anything for you in terms of making things better. The best we can do is predict how bad it will be. On that note, I suggest reading these links about how various state bars view academic misconduct:

I can only glean what happened hear from other poster's responses, but I figured I'd still chime in and say a couple of things.

First, if you do confess--which I think is your best option from both a moral and a self-interest standpoint--you should consult with your friend first and give him/her an opportunity to confess with you. If you both confess, you'll probably get similar treatment. If one of you confesses, the one that didn't originally confess is probably going to get screwed much harder. On that note, it's probably in your interest to have some sort of record (e.g. a text message) of the fact that you reached out to your friend to talk about confessing in case your friend freaks out and decides to run to the administration before you get a chance to go in together. People do wild things when they feel cornered.

Second, I just want to say that I feel bad for you. I've been in (personal life) situations before where I did something really shitty but had a low enough probability of being caught that I was put to the same to-confess-or-not decision as you're in right now. It's a really unique sort of pain, and one that you will get little-to-no sympathy for because you're the instigator. FWIW, I came forward each time. Looking back, coming forward was always the right decision, but thinking back on those situations still makes me shiver. Now I stay very very far away from those sorts of situations, as I imagine you will from now on too.
