Simpson's Paradox

Post by BelugaWhale » Wed Apr 30, 2014 11:54 pm

I get how it happens, but then when the question asks choose which one is better I have no idea which one to choose. Any ideas?

There's a kidney stone treatment example that's often used to explain it.

Google it?

Interesting.

"The paradoxical conclusion is that treatment A is more effective when used on small stones, and also when used on large stones, yet treatment B is more effective when considering both sizes at the same time. In this example the "lurking" variable (orconfounding variable) of the stone size was not previously known to be important until its effects were included."

I mean I've googled it and I get how it happens I don't get which is the right answer.

For instance, for the kidney stone example, if the question asks, which drug is "better" then which drug do I choose? Assume the question doesnt specify whether I have a large or small kidney stone.

Edit: the answer I think is treatment A but this is easy example, some of those out there are much harder.

I just learned about this paradox when you posted about it, but it seems like the solution is to figure out what is messing up the statistics.
