Take and RA position for the summer?
Could use some feedback from ya'll. To start, I am a 1L at a Tier-1 (30s), and finished last semester in the top 15% of the class. Unfortunately, it looks like I struck out landing a private firm gig for the summer. However, I have a very strong interest in business law, and I was offered a position as an RA for the head of the business law department this summer. I am curious as to how this looks on a resume compared with clerking for a local district court judge (not sure what my responsibilities would be yet) or working at a PD's office (offers from both). The RA spot is paid, the other two are not, and the RA job would allow me to stay in the apartment I have now for the rest of the summer. Any opinions? Thank you

Do whatever you want to do. None of the options is going to significantly change anything for next year, so choose the best fit for you. Sounds like the RA position is what you want since it's in your field of interest, paid, and convenient for housing. Go for it.
EDIT: scooped last line, dammit

Pretty close to the exact same situation at a T14. I'm taking the money.Hoosiers wrote:Could use some feedback from ya'll. As long as you are doing legal work your 1L summer, it's fine.

Milk, any summer job for all it is,worth, get in with a prof, make it clear on day one that you desire full exposure to,all,of,the work,.
Some people go to a RA position and wonder what they'll be told to do all summer. I say talk to your professor and tell them what you hope to gain from your experience during the summer. They are more likely,to,craft work, for, you if you speak up.
Ignore the weird commas. I'm typing on the ipad and it's late
