Books for Exam Writing

Post by Connor Benz » Wed Feb 26, 2014 11:35 pm

I want to start writing exams for spring break. Are there any good books that anybody recommends for exam writing? I had a professor write on my exam: "analysis, Analysis, ANALYSIS"

I took that as I need to work on my issue spotting (kidding  ). So anybody with recommendations would help.

Thanks!

Getting To Maybe. Read this asap.

I see a lot of people with tight pants when they talk about how amazing LEEWS is, never used it myself though.

The Siegel's Essay and Multiple Choice Questions and Answers gives you solid examples of how to use facts (analysis).

I had read getting to maybe like four times before my 1L fall exams and credit it as a large part of doing well. I think there is a lot of value in it by teaching how to make different types of arguments.

I think that's really the take away but just telling that to someone without them knowing what that looks like in practice won't do much good. We had teaching assistants tell our whole section to argue both sides and keep making arguments but for plenty of people just hearing that won't make it sink in. Getting to maybe might not be essential for that but I think people really need to spend time understanding how to make arguments and GTM is just an easy way to see that.

agree with sentiment about GTM that its pretty obvious and intuitive advice. probably worth a glance if you dont understand the concept of forks, which i found to be central to taking law exams.

It's not always obvious to newbies how to argue both sides, hence the book Getting To Maybe.
