informal interview?
I have an informal interview scheduled with a partner at a biglaw firm ( with the help of a friend)to talk about 1L summer opportunities. It is possible that I am not being considered for that firm but that he will put me in touch and possibly recommend me to a different firm. What questions should I be asking him?

What do you want to know? Besides things like pay.
You can ask him about his background. How did he make it to the firm that he's at now? What are important things that he thinks you should know.
Dude, have a conversation. Don't interrogate the guy. Just keep things natural.

Does every large law firm pay 1L interns? Should I reference something I read about him on the firms bio or is that weird?

And in general I want to know about the market I hope to get a position in, and I want him to put me in contact with other lawyers

Some pay.
Don't reference anything. It sounds fake.
Seriously, just have a conversation and let things flow naturally. If he mentions putting you in contact with other people/firms, great. Thank him and let him know that you appreciate it very much. If he doesn't mention anything straight up ask him "are there any firms that you would recommend I look at or do you know anyone that I could specifically talk to about possibly getting a summer job?"
