Re: Summer employment with bad grades
There will be somewhere you can get summer employment. Just apply and use your previous experiences to your advantage.Herdy wrote:Hi everyone,
I'm a 1L international student currently enrolled in a T20 law school here in the states.
My grades have been released and they were quite disappointing (Bs and a C) and I'm worried about summer employment.
I have experiences in moot court competitions (receiving awards) and an internship with a law firm.
Would I have any chance for summer employment?
If nothing else, trying applying to be a research assistant for a professor. People have told me that a lot of the professors don't really care about your grades.

It's easy to get 1L summer employment. The tough part is finding paid work. As the above suggests, serving as a research assistant for a prof would be the best way to do that.

I would be more worried about post grad employment than 1L summer employment.
What do you want to do with your law degree and how much debt will you be in?

Even having really good grades at a top school doesn't really give you a big edge for 1L summer employment. It's all about connections, timing and personality unless your grades are truly elite and a 1L SA is possible (or you have ties to tiny markets). Like Zuck said, the problem is going to be who will pay you to do work. RA doesn't really count, in my opinion, because the 10 or 12/hr at best off sets your summer expenses.

Sounds like you got it made in the shade no matter what. You'll find some sort of employment this summer I'm sure.
