estimating my numeric gpa to a rough rank help pls!
so after my first semester, i got a 88. still waiting for one class, but i figure itll be around the same as my other grades. my schools mandatory median is 84.5, so im curious as to what rank i might be.
also, is class rank released by semester? trying to transfer to a different school so this information will be incredibly helpful to me. thank you all.

youre probably better off asking upperclassmen at your school who know the typical distribution.chrislee012 wrote:so after my first semester, i got a 88.1. still waiting for one class, but i figure itll be around the same as my other grades. my schools mandatory median is 84.5, so im curious as to what rank i might be.
depends on school. Some schools don't release rank at all.is class rank released by semester?

You're above median.

Knowing your score, you can't figure out your percentile if all you know about the curve is that the median is 84.5. You need at least one other grade/percentile combination in order to plot the curve, and that's assuming your school's curve is a perfectly-forced bell curve.chrislee012 wrote:ah, my apologies. late night + stress + alcohol gets the even the best of us.. but if possible any idea what a very rough percentile would look like?
As it is now, it's theoretically possible that your 88 average is the highest in the school, which would put you in the 99th percentile. This would be a narrow "bell". But it's also possible that the scores cover a much wider range, which would put your 88 closer to the middle of the pack (a wide bell).
If you can find one more data point, such as "a 94 average is top 10%", then we can tell more about the shape of the curve and give you a better estimate. But Nova's right - if you can find out the curve from someone at the school, that's going to be your best bet.
