Dating a Resident Doctor?

Post by SoftScrub » Sat Dec 28, 2013 4:01 pm

Any experience? Recommended?
I have this opportunity but is it worth even giving a shot?

I just finished my 1L first semester and will be likely super busy throughout law school but also I don't wanna end up alone?

The only downside is the wife/gf sharing that goes in doctor circles. Are you prepared for that?

I thought about posting in Lounge but in my situation I thought it'd be more proper to post it here because I'm a stealth gunner who secretly suffers alone and who I date affects my law school career.

It's very common for Doctors to share wives and girl friends. It's a collegiality thing, aka "we are all doctors" thinking. You are considered rude and prude if you don't share. Just sex, not like poly amorous stuff.

I'm personally a fan of dating people and not professions, but YMMV.

It's not a death sentence for two professionals, but you have to be prepared to coordinate schedules. It depends partially on your career aspirations, but mostly you should expect to miss things that are important to the other person because of work. All I can recommend is know what you're getting into, which is that their career aspirations are equally important to yours. (Married to a resident).

What is the residency in? How available he/she is could vary widely depending on what specialty we are talking about here.

I never dated a resident in law school, but I did my sophomore and junior year in college. The only downside I experienced was the fact that the entire relationship revolved around his needs and schedule. Literally, everything was about him. This might not be a doctor trait and more of a my ex trait, but I've heard this mentality is common among surgeons, which he was. I say, if he's a good guy or if she's a good girl, go for it. Why not? Plus, the potential dual income could be quite nice. :)

I'm not a gold digger. If any, I have less debt than him.
My main concern was that our pursuits are so different yet all-consuming and I was wondering if and how such relationships might stand the test of time, finals, etc.

If you are seriously asking this question on a message board, I think you should drop him/ her. You can probably gun for a partner with more prestige than a resident. The personal qualities of who you date seem to not matter. Go for a person with a better job and richer parents.

Or just date someone who's not a lazy dickhead. I'm assuming you're a 20-something. Mostly everyone you're going to date now isn't "rich" but as long as they are driven and intelligent; they'll do alright for themselves. Or you could just go the sugar daddy route and date someone your parent's age.

I just watched Wolf of Wall Street so I am inclined to believe tales of rich people being very, very morally bankrupt
