1L Job Search
So I went to school today and saw a bunch of 1Ls walking around in professional attire while I had on joe's jeans, a Cal tee and Chuck Taylor's and I thought, why are all these people in professional attire? Apparently these kids are having interviews for internships. Its the middle of September and kids are looking for jobs? What the heck, I feel like I am missing out. When is a good time to begin looking for internships as a 1L? Summer isn't until May, isn't it too soon? And I don't understand how they can search for jobs when we don't even have our grades yet?

Ok. So here is a better question - generally, when should 1L's begin looking for jobs/internships? I really want to obtain a summer associate position at a law firm.

Come to grips with the fact that you will not have a 1L SA in most circumstances. What school are you at?Connor Benz wrote:Ok. So here is a better question - generally, when should 1L's begin looking for jobs/internships? I really want to obtain a summer associate position at a law firm.

Ah, ok. Cornell 2L here, so maybe I can shed some light on this. The people I know that got firm jobs 1L summer fell into 1 of 3 categories: 1. Diversity programs, which many major firms run. 2. In demand foreign language proficiency (eg Japanese) or IP background. 3. People from Texas/random secondary and tertiary markets.
In other words, your chances are essentially predetermined by factors outside of your control.

Could be interviews for Pro Bono positions. A few people in my section have had some and needed to suit up

It might be for tryouts for Moot Court Teams. Alternatively, they might be doing observations of court hearings for their Civ Pro classes. Also, depending on how formal your school is, some people might just like wearing suits.
