Re: The Write On - Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we?
I have a pretty stupid question but I find the directions in my packet insufficient in terms of explaining what the point of this paper is: I have a case-in-chief in which two sides fight over whether something should be admissible for evidence, and argue about the meaning of a prior case. Sounds pretty generic and probably like everyone else's. But where do I come in? Am I giving my own opinion or evaluating the arguments? What exactly is the deal?

Let's not kid ourselves: nothing good can come of this. Either you don't get on and welp that sucks, or you do get on and have to spend next year cite checking and writing some masturbatory scholarly note.TLS wrote:Congrats! Hah, that's true. I just meant the world feels full of endless possibilities because we're now free (at least for the time being).Danger Zone wrote:Let's not kid ourselves: nothing good can come of this. Knowing the quality of the work I turned in, I will actually lose respect for any journal that picks me.

Don't know what your school's requirements are like, but it's really not that bad. We do 70 in the fall and 50 in the spring. It goes by pretty quick at the beginning of the semester.Danger Zone wrote:Let's not kid ourselves: nothing good can come of this. Re: The Write On - Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall (of text)
I'm halfway through the write-on, and I just keep wondering:
Why the blazes is this busy work so prestigious? I mean, seriously. I'm fighting tooth and nail for the opportunity to be an anonymous spading bitch and write some horrid article that no one is ever going to read.
Why is this so fought over, and why do employers want this on someone's resume???

Also, if you think about it, biglaw isn't really hiring junior associates for their scholarly brilliance. They need people who are willing and able to grind through tedious crap that they have no personal investment in while maintaining an attention to detail. In that respect, the LR write-on is an excellent proxy.

A tip for those who are still doing the write-on, will do the write-on at your transferred school, or next year: follow the damn instructions including how to name your file.

I get that it might be slightly annoying, but can you explain why this is important at all? Does the name of the file somehow impede your ability to grade it?target wrote:A tip for those who are still doing the write-on, will do the write-on at your transferred school, or next year: follow the damn instructions including how to name your file.
