Law Firm Summer Externship- yes or no? Forum

So I asked a contact at a medium firm for any summer positions. He told me he's not hiring but could get me an Externship, unpaid but with a stipend. I am not eaxy sure what it means to be unpaid but betting a stipend (min wage?), but it seems to be a good gig for a 1L summer. Anyone have experience with this type of work? I just don't want to end up pushing papers...
