I'm a 1L, was thinking of applying to a few firms for the summer along with public interest stuff. I know that most firms don't take 1Ls and don't advertise openings for 1Ls but one of the firms I was looking at has what they call a summer clerk Program and the deadline for applying was in Oct.
Does a summer clerk program refer to something that only 2Ls do or is any student working at a law firm over the summer called a clerk?
Stupid question: can a 1L be a summer clerk? Forum

Okay thanks! I thought the program looked like it was for 2Ls, just wanted to make sure that I wasn't completely off base

Big firms in big cities overwhelmingly hire 2Ls, but will sometimes pick up a 1L (often due to special skills or background). Smaller firms and markets are much more likely to hire 1Ls, and much less likely to publicly advertise their programs.
It's always worth applying to a firm, you never know.
