Never had one before. I have one this weekend, with 3 days to do complete it.

Any difference in preparation you guys recommend between a take home like that and a traditional 3 hour issue spotter?

It's a plain old issue spotter, as far as I know.

I'm thinking I don't need to memorize / outline as much before hand?

I'd still outline, and cross reference the outline to the text, statutes, cases, etc. You still want that logical outline layout, it will help you keep your answers organized.

No need to memorize. Just read through your outline a few times so you get the generally idea of the different topics covered. Knowing that, you can issue spot and then just look in your outline for more of the details and nuances within that specific topic.

Buy a good supplement/treatise. It really helped double check things (and be inspired) when I had a similar exam.

Never taken a 3 day exam, but have taken plenty of 8 hours. For my 8 hour exams, I basically treat them the same as 3 hour exams. But since you have 3 days to do it (and I assume it's word limited), I would probably prepare as I would a 3 hour exam but just not nearly as much studying before hand. I actually think it might be better to have a longer, more in-depth outline though, since you have time to really hit the complex and nuanced parts of a fact pattern in 3 days.

Good luck man. I find it hard to treat them like issue spotters with that much time. Honestly I have done well enough on longer timeframe take home by just paying attention in class and spending all finals period on time crunch exams. Just use whatever hornbooks, and WestlawNext stuff you can to learn what you need for the take home... Usually its seriously a few niche areas of the class that get tested, and therefore spending a huge chunk of time memorizing the course has a low payoff (unless you just derive enjoyment from memorizing everything I guess).
