POLL: A fellow 1L got his laptop stolen.. what do we do?
Just wondering how the community would respond to a situation if a 1L who got his laptop stolen right before finals came to you and asked you for your notes/outlines..

Send them both. You think one person will destroy your curve. How is this even a question?????????rishabhagny wrote:Just wondering how the community would respond to a situation if a 1L who got his laptop stolen right before finals came to you and asked you for your notes/outlines..
The person is already at a disadvantage cause most people learn by their own notes much better than by other people's notes.

I think it would be nice to share your notes and outlines, although I don't think you should feel obligated to. It's his own fault for not backing his information up. Plus he can still get old outlines that are floating around and work from that.rishabhagny wrote:Just wondering how the community would respond to a situation if a 1L who got his laptop stolen right before finals came to you and asked you for your notes/outlines..

You are a piece of shit if you don't hand over both.rishabhagny wrote:Just wondering how the community would respond to a situation if a 1L who got his laptop stolen right before finals came to you and asked you for your notes/outlines..
Not only is it the nice thing to do it, it probably doesn't hurt you even a little.
1 person being better than you doesn't do shit. And unless you really suck at exams, chances aren't that great he'd be better than you with the notes and outlines. Not only to notes and outlines only make a small difference in grades. Chances are he's just better or just worse than you at exam taking.
The only way it hurts, is if he was just about as good as you at exams. And even then, it's one class ranking.

I'm not saying I'm not handing over both – I already did. I'm just curious to see how everyone else would handle the situation.

Yeah, give him both. I've had "cooperate to graduate" drilled into my head for the past 25 years, so I couldn't bring myself to let a guy flounder if I could help him out. Ditto on the "give him crap for not having backups", though.

OP I see you did both, but for any future 1L who reads this forum, the above is the correct answer.Desert Fox wrote:You are a piece of shit if you don't hand over both.

Dropbox is definitely the tits. For backing up and that I don't have to take my laptop everywhere if I need to quickly edit or print something.. I don't know why more people don't use it.Lincoln wrote:Definitely give notes and outlines. But seriously, people, back up your shit.

Yep. I take all my notes in Evernote and write all my outlines in Pages which backs up to iCloud automatically.Lincoln wrote:Definitely give notes and outlines. But seriously, people, back up your shit.

If someone fucks off all semester then wants notes, they can shove it.
But for something like this, absolutely. Share what you got. I'd like to think people would do the same for me, and it will make zero difference on your exam grade.

Nope. I have a firm "if not a douchebag, they get whatever I have" rule.kalvano wrote:If someone fucks off all semester then wants notes, they can shove it.

For those who use Dropbox, what are you typically putting in there? I use it mostly for file sharing, but for backups, I like having full local and offsite backups so that if my computer is crashed/lost/stolen/whatever, I can just get a new laptop, connect it and hit "restore".

I have my "Dropbox folder" inside My Documents. And I just put all my files (that aren't video, or pictures) in there.ScottRiqui wrote:For those who use Dropbox, what are you typically putting in there? Re: POLL: A fellow 1L got his laptop stolen.. what do we do?
Exactly what I do. I have all my schoolwork in a folder on my computer that automatically syncs with Dropbox. That way I don't have to be connected to the internet to access my own stuff, but if/when I am, it syncs.Desert Fox wrote:I have my "Dropbox folder" inside My Documents. if you aren't' syncing everything to a Google drive or MSN skydrive then you're absolutely doing it wrong! Most school email accounts come with a set amount of cloud storage anyway.

Send him everything and a link to Drive/SkyDrive/DropBox and offer to help him set it up. Absolutely no excuse for this kind of crap in 2012.

I think there is a correlation between people who refuse to share their "hardwork" and people whose outlines and class notes are pure dong.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
